What's the best surface of using an optical mouse?

I bought one awhile back along with a pad for it...but it seems as though the pad becomes less effective as time goes on.

I run the mouse across my desktop and get a better response but it creates an area where some wear is showing.

Anyway what would you guys suggest?
TIA.

Exactly I use mine on a mousepad as well but a mousepad with a slick surface not a cloth type surface and it works perfectly for me.

You can do what Digipimp said OR go to a cabinet shop and offer to pay for some formica scraps that are large enough to use as a pad... they don't wear quickly and can be stuck to your desk surface easily. Usually they will just let you have the scraps. lol

Or if your desk surface is nasty, formica the whole thing.

I used one of those plastic like cutting boards when he first put an optical on this terminal too. They cost about 5 bucks and come in various sizes. (JUST heavy enough and textured enough to not slip around)
