Mpeg Compression Gurus - GoFuckYourself.com

I got a bunch of mpegs I need to resize down a bit, they're about 1:25min clips and are about 21mb a piece....

what would you consider an optimal size for these clips that are a little over 1min? just so I have a goal to shoot for while fucking with them in Virtualdub ;)

Adultnex, thanks man, good article for sure, but WAY more detailed than I need atm...

hell just a good plain english tutorial on mpeg compression with VirtualDub would work imo....

what's your average 1min clips size?

I just did dozens of mpegs, and each 1min clip is exactly 5.62 mb, and the quality is pretty good.

Nowhere near. I just have the time to play around with settings etc.

Ulead studio pro, lowest stero audio compression, and I think a 700kbit rate. It is not on this computer, but those settings are close. They are mpeg1. I am ignorant on this shit, hopefully someone who knows will post what they do. I think the key is bitrate, and having a good quality video to begin with. ours are mini-dv, so they are pretty good quality to begin with.

If I was to do batch compressions I would do them with my UNIX software. Long ago I compressed the hell out of web movies when the technology was 3 months old. Buzz me if your windows puter croaks or you want something automated at http://www.cologroup.net/html/chat/frame2.html

The best thing you can do to decrease a size of a movie is to extract all the frames into an animated GIF, and then extract the audio and play it in the browser. The sound may not be synced perfectly, but you'll have a VERY fast load time. Yep.

I am experimenting with MPEG compression also.

I am using Virtual Dub to apply watermark filters and deinterlace. (deinterlace should not make vcd (mpeg1) better but I think it actually does)

Then I am encoding the avi output from virtual dub with TMPGenc. The original bitrate is 1150 kbit/sec and if you reduce this you will get the size down. I have gotten good results with a bitrate as low as 500. This will make a 1 min clip to 3.81 MB

I am still experimenting with diferent filters to make the quality even better but it's not easy to judge it you have better quality or not.

Any of you guys experiment with DIVX 8-) streamers? Full screen video at 800 kbps seems fine for action movies and 400 seems fine for talking head videos.
