When markham posts, you dismiss any 'knowledge' he tries to portray, and understand it's 100% opinion, and 99% made-up fantasy stats/numbers along with what amounts to nothing more than pathetic whining in order to get others to agree with him so he feels less of a failure. The man is poison to anyone learning this biz, and that's a measure of who he is - he'd delibarately mislead and misguide newbies in order to make himself feel better.

The analogy i used was basically like trying to deal with writers. They'll tell you how they earn $2.00 a word and are published in huge publications to create the impression that they are high paid and worth a lot and then neglect to mention that it only happened once and will never... ever happen again. Like someone that won at a casino, they conveniently forget about the massive losses... and talk about the win day and night.
I strongly suspect that he bullshitted his way into a few big content orders at the peak of the market, got ahead a little, leased an office, bought a car etc.. but that moment was both the start and end of his business as he just sold content here and there through his site and sloiwly coasted to a site, ending it all with his bargain content site and then ultimately trynig to license to tubes... then shutting it all down. He almost immediately started to launch adult sites (paulmarkhamteens.com) after he got online and tgps for trafic generation etc etc etc because he couldn't make much with content by selling it. Even though he was talking on forums like he was posting from his private island..

This is why towards the end of that village idiot thread, i was feeling a little weird about him and his replies. It seemed like he genuinely didn't recall anything. He's stubborn and insane... so it wasn't clear what was him just trying to deny, thinking nothing could be proven or whether or not he actually had some sort of issue recalling past events.. like maybe a stroke or series of mini strokes or some other issue affecting memory. It's easy to say "he could have simply asked Eva" but then again, if you are 100% sure an event never happened because you can't recall any aspect of it whatsoever, then you likely wouldn't ask.
I mean, he was asking around about who i was when i described everything in detail... even the interior of his own house... yet he apparently couldn't put it all together as if foreigners fly in from Russia all the time to talk biz, he shows them his operation, takes them on a photo shoot (a shoot which he fully recalled) and then he invites them to his home for dinner... and can't remember even one detail about them.
But with this thread, i started thinking about it again. Why was he having Eva and another assistant shoot most of his content in the last couple years of shooting? Particularly in a business that for him was in obvious, sharp decline and where he truly believed himself to be a genius and true artist and other Playboy/Penthouse photogs to be hacks.
I wonder now if something actually did happen like a stroke or series of stokes. His eyesight might have been failing him, he might have had tremors in his hands, different types of memory failing him etc. Thinking about it all, that makes a great deal more sense than anything he's said..

At the time, Paul hadn't shot in a couple years. He got throat cancer and had been bedridden. Fabian of Manwin came into the thread. Eventually he asked what it would take to get Paul back and shoot a scene for Manwin. Everyone was saying there was no way in a million years this shoot would happen. Things like "Paul would never shoot for Manwin" as he was their sworn enemy, "deal with the devil" - etc."Paul will take the money and run, lol" yada yada etc.
But as the thread progressed in became clear that this shoot was actually going to happen! Someone asked Paul to make sure he got good behind the scenes footage, I think as a joke, but it made me think about shooting this as a mini documentary. Kind of crazy-sounding, I know, but I was planning a trip to Europe anyway, and I suppose my 'filmmaker' instinct kicked in, and I was like, I gotta go to Brno and shoot this!
In retrospect, I'm very glad I did it, and look back fondly on the experience!
Would still love to turn it into a longer documentary piece someday by getting Fabian and DamianJ's interviews, but that probably won't happen.
But enough for now about the why's and how's of the documentary, let's get to the documentary itself!:

It's interesting that you did that for sure and actually pretty cool. He seems to be very subdued in those videos like he was at shows... but I imagine that by that point, he'd had quite a few life changing moments in addition to the physical and emotional toll it took on him. I wouldn't wish any of that on anyone, no matter who they were..

Fred's kind of a private guy as well, so I'm not going to go into much detail ... but I used to make trips to his country to hang out with him and talk biz. We drank. A lot.
Anyway, we made it into the most popular club in town by arguing with the bouncers until they gave up. They felt we were too intoxicated but we were getting exceedingly good at handling that scenario. God only knows what either of us said. I vaguely remember him trying to get me to speak Russian and threaten them - I may have been making fake phone calls in Russian while pointing at him menacingly but I can't remember much as so many of those nights kind of run together in my memories. Anyway , the bar was on the second floor and we made our way up the stairs somehow and there was a couch at the top - where I just fell into and couldn't get up.
We're laying on this couch not sure how we are going to make it to the beer or how to get the beer to come to us. A dude walks up and says in perfect English "you doing alright friend" I said something and he said something and left. I look at my buddy and said "ok, fuck it,... I'm done drinking - now I'm hallucinating and it's not even a great hallucination"... He asks what I was talking about and I replied "I just imagined that Tom Jones walked up to me and asked me if I was doing ok and seemed kinda concerned"... He responds "oh, shit. Tom Jone! I was trying to remember his name".. I remember a moment of being puzzled and likely said something as I puzzled through how he was seeing my hallucination and then it occurred to me... I crawled up to my feet and wandered into the bar and walked up to him. I don't remember exactly what was said but he greeted me and asked if I was doing ok and I said something kinda shitty (which always plays out as being funny as hell in my mind first) like "I just needed to come in here and make sure that was real. Mostly because I'd like to think bat if I was hallucinating, that I could do better" he laughed, was cool and I stumbled away..

Most people are clueless when it comes to real wealth and power. Most of us live 'down here' amongst real humans. But people who earn millions live a different reality. They are the nobodies who pass us by on the street and/or the people we never see because their windows are tinted and they fly private jets around. These people don't want to go to shows or hangout with 'us', and if they do they certainly don't want JFK taking a picture of them.
