Why are so many people afraid to fly?

In the US the people who refuse to fly post 911. Are they that cowardly? I am getting sick of hearing about airlines going out of buisness. Are you afraid to fly because of 911? Know of anyone who is? I would like to know, I don't know of any, but obviously there is alot of people who are.

Well, the media is a big part of why pple in the US are affraid after 911. Basically, when you constantly are fed images of planes crashing into buildings, and hear reports of shoe bombers and idiots trying to get on planes with chainsaws and pipe-bombs, it starts to affect some people.

Then others like myself simply hate to fly because falling 30,000 feet to my death gives me way too much time to think about what a shithead I've been.

I totally agree. The airlines took a major hit post 911. People are damn cowards. We took a flight to Florida in November. Like a day after that plane took a nosedive into Queens.

I was fuckin nervous, but what can you do? You gotta get where you gotta go. Especially now, more than ever, with this on-again off-again "war", our citizens should be doing all they can to support the economy.

Get on those planes people! Take a vacation.

I have always hated flying. I hate airports. The lines, security, etc. I hate squeezing onto the plane with a bunch of idiots that drag all thier shit on and jam the aisles trying to stuff it in the overhead bins. And I really hate the way those same stupid fuckers leap up and jam the fucking aisles the second the plane comes to a stop. I have flown only once since 9-11 and I hate it even more now. One way ticket purchased less than 5 days in advance so I was singled out as a security risk and searched and hassled every five fucking feet. If it wasn't for Valium or Xanax I could never do it. The airlines have always made it an uncomfortable ordeal and now the new security is making it intolerable.

Well obviously high security measures is a must. I rather fly for 8 hours then drive for 24. I am not about to let a few minor headaches detour me from a good time.

Who said I was speaking specifically about you? See how arrogant YOU are? When I said "you", I meant it as a generalization. Anything anyone says can arguably require qualification.

But now that you decided to expose the fact you are an enebriated, cum-guzzling homo with an over-inflated ego and small dick, I'll be more than happy to direct these next frew words directly AT you...

GO FUCK YOURSELF.

(an impossibility to be sure, if your cock is anywhere near the size of your brain).

Next to being an adult webmaster, i am an airline pilot (freelance) and actually as a pilot i haven't seen any drop in pax since 911. As before all the flights i do are over 90% full. Alot of airliners where in trouble prior to 911.... alot of them are also taking 911 as an excuse to fire people to get out of trouble.... the presure on the management of airliners isn't as big as before 911, now they have a reason to fire them. Anyway.... nobody should be afraid of flying, the media makes people scared to take an aricraft latelly. All those talks about making it secure by giving the pilots a gun license and let them carry one and making heavy gunproof cockpit doors is also alot of BS.... they should look at security BEFORE the aircraft (airport), thighten things up there. It's pretty pointless to do all that stuff aboard the aircraft..... and in my opinion a gun is the most dangerous thing on an aircraft, even in hands of the guys flying it. A bullit hole in the fuselage can result in decompression, dive, even the fuselage falling appart if it is at high altittude and cruising at 350 knots. But the one thing i know is this: any terror group won't target airliners anymore.... i would be more affraid to stand at the busstation waiting for the bus then to get into my office at 35.000 feet
Don't believe it guys, airliners aren't doing any different in passangers then before 911, they just play it out as an excuse... still the same pax and same money getting lost in the airline industry.... exept for one thing... now they can blame it on something else then bad management.

I consider it dangerous due to the fact that we are in a metal tube at 35,000 feet travelling at 500+ mph which just isn't natural!

Having said that I like flying and do so fairly often - the only part I hate is the hours of security checks and then being cramped up on longhaul flights (4 damn flights each way to the last internext was not fun!) - even in biz class it sucks!

As for that site its quite reassuring to read about a recent plane crash somewhere coz it lowers the chances of a crash on the next plane I get on..

Probably DVT is a bigger danger than crashes, at least on long haul flights..

I HATE flying, not because of the 9/11 thing. But it scares me because I have no control over what's going on.

I mean when a plane goes down, nothing you can do, and you are 99.999% dead for sure...

I have no idea why I have that feeling, because I know a higher % dies in a car, but that is just the way I feel it

It has nothing to do with fear.
Americans refuse to be treated like criminals because of a handful of muslim terrorists.
As long as the airlines and the government treat 65yr old grandmothers the same way they treat towel heads, the airlines will continue to have problems.

You must be a very lucky person and I would play the lotto if I were you because you have a better chance of winning the lotto then being hit lightening while being attacked by a shark all at the same time

Man I have been in so many incidents on planes, my friends wont even fly with me anymore. Ive been in planes that the engine came apart on, hydraulic failures, blown tires, severe turbulance, failed electrical systems....etc etc......but Im still alive

Plus you know if you really think about it, dieing in a crash is a pretty good way to go...you wont feel shit and your family is gonna get a payday. Besides that, the truth is that people walk away from 75% of plane accidents, but of course the news only focuses on the ones doing the death dive from 30,000 ft on fire.

per number of flights, aren't there more airplane crashes then deaths per number of drivers for cars? doesn't look like planes are more safe than automobiles.

ah ok, the numbers for airlines were wrong. guess for someone on a bike like me the fatality rate must be 1000x greater than flying. so many idiots on the road.

There were 0 deaths from airline crashes in the U.S. for the year 2002. Pretty amazing. Flying is getting safer and safer.

Deaths from car crashes were in the tens of thousands.

there's less people that fly than people that drive. so you can't look at aggregate numbers

Actually i would leave that decision to the ones flying it... if the nose goes down that doesn't mean you have to start praying, think of this:
of all the systems in an aircraft (about 2 million per heavy jet) only 2 need to work in order to keep it flying, engines and flight controls and those are backed up and backed up again...
The chanse of those two failing is practicly 0. And nose down in some situations IS a standard procedure, as strange as it may sound :-)

People who are afraid of flying are goddamned pussies.

Bottom line.

Grow some testicles and grab that boarding pass.
