News Israel raids hit Gaza as violence flares for fourth day

Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - Israeli aircraft hit two Hamas targets in Gaza early on Saturday in response to rocket fire as the worst flare-up of violence since a 2014 war entered a fourth day.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the rocket launch and most such fire since 2014 has been carried out by fringe Islamist groups but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all such attacks.

"Earlier today (Saturday)... a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip at southern Israel," the army said in a statement.

"In response... aircraft targeted two Hamas terror infrastructures in the southern Gaza Strip."

Hamas security sources said the retaliatory raid hit two brickworks in the southern city of Khan Yunis, causing damage but no casualties.

But witnesses said two missiles hit a base of Hamas's military wing east of the city, causing significant damage.

It was the fourth day of the worst cross-border violence since the 50-day war between Israel and Hamas which left 2,251 Palestinians and 73 Israelis dead in 2014.

Mortar fire by Palestinian militants and Israeli air strikes and shelling have raised concerns for the future of an informal truce that has held since the conflict ended.

An Israeli tank round killed a Palestinian woman when it hit her home east of Khan Yunis on Thursday.

Since Wednesday, Hamas and other militant groups have fired at least 12 mortar rounds at Israeli forces searching along the border, and short distances inside Gaza, for infiltration tunnels leading into Israel.

Such tunnels were among the most feared weapons of Hamas fighters during the 2014 conflict and one was uncovered by the army on Thursday.

The Israeli army said it had "no interest whatsoever" in a military escalation, but would continue to act against Hamas as "it continues to breach Israeli sovereignty and build tunnels."

Hamas's Gaza leader, Ismail Haniya, said on Friday that the group was "not calling for a new war", but would not accept Israeli incursions into Palestinian territory.

A former head of Israel's Shin Bet internal security agency, Yaakov Perry, said that Hamas was fearful of losing the tunnel network, which was one of its proudest military achievements.

Hamas "is using mortar fire to communicate that fear to Israel," he said.

Perry, who is now a member of parliament for the centrist opposition Yesh Atid party, urged the government to avoid adopting a purely military response and to take steps to improve the lives of Gaza's residents.

"It would be good if in addition to the determined operational activities against the tunnels, Israel would take measures to improve the economic situation and provide options that would show Gazans the possibility of an easier and better future," he said.

And thus it begins again.... Israel will smack them around for the next month until they beg for mercy. Again.

The hatred in this area runs so deep. The violence will not stop until the hatred stops.

Ummm, it might stop faster if we didn't send $4 Billion a year there to help keep it going.

      Good luck.

It is an unwritten rule that the west can gift away land that does not belong to it. It is known. Because of reasons. The pesky palestinians obviously do not understand this. Bad bad sports.

It's ironic how in the other thread about Europe and Muslims it's all anti muslim, but in this thread it's "hatred in this area" & "We need to stop giving money" & "if we didn't send $4 Billion a year there to help keep it going".

Be careful what you ask for; The Israelis would just make a deal with the Chinese or the Russians -- the result would be a more limited sphere of US influence in the Middle East.

So, roll up into a little ball and hide behind a wall or threaten to use military might to achieve policy goals?

I don't think that the US, NATO or the Russians will adopt a foreign policy of noninterference anytime soon.

It already has; Did you notice that the Israelis continued to attack arms shipments in Syria that were destined for Hezbollah while the Russian Air Force was busy bombing Syrian rebels and backing up the Russian's client Assad government?

The Russians were not afraid of the IAF -- they (the Russians and the Israelis ) made a deal of non-intervention. Before and during the Russian air war in Syria there were top level meetings between the Israeli and Russian governments.

                          You are dead wrong.

Also, there is an ongoing military hardware development between the Americans and the Israelis that would be jeopardized. I am sure that the Russians or Chinese would be more than happy to gain that knowledge and financially support further development

One has to spend time learning what matters to the rulers of each of the nations to see how their ambitions/priorities conflict. A relevant example of something they disagree on is Syria; Putin wants his puppet Assad in place while Israel want regime change. Next would be Iran; Putin supports the current Iranian regime, Israel wants Iran to be attacked by The West.

Russia and Israel would both want to avoid a direct war with each other i.e. WW3, but they are keen to have control of their neighbors, meaning that proxy wars between Israel and Russia are inevitable.

Now actually I would prefer that the US government stop the grants to Israel.

Why? So the Israelis could call their own shots in their neighborhood. I think that the US buys too much influence in Israel. The Israelis could make a lot of money competing freely in the world's munitions sales arena

I am sure that the Indians would like better military technology. In fact they are buying Israeli made attack drone aircraft now. Iron Dome and other ABM technology is of interest around the world also. US financial aide could be easily offset by export revenue of military technology.

So cut the fucking money off and see what happens.

I think making sure OUR banks are strong makes more sense that endless wars in other countries.

Again you are talking out of your ass

                                                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_foreign_aid

Afghanistan got more than twice the US foreign aid than Israel got in 2014.

                                                  Look at the list

The Israelis laugh at the stupid Americans trying to buy influence -- seriously. When I lived in Israel I heard that from many people.

The United States has spent around $110 billion to rebuild Afghanistan since 2002, the year after American troops invaded the country in the wake of the September 11th terror attacks, according to the US government. ...
                                                  ...

...The Institute's report is a cautionary tale for American taxpayers as well as foreign aid groups that were dumping around $15.7 billion a year into the country annually ? providing around 98 percent of the Afghan gross domestic product, according to a 2010 World Bank report ? before the international community and American troops began pulling out in recent years. ...

                                                  https://news.vice.com/article/us-aid...en-report-says
Americans are just feeding corruption in Afghanistan and getting nothing in return. But that doesn't bother you does it?

the USA does not give aid or rebuild, it gives contracts to cronies and keeps the gravy train going by always having something to "rebuild"...
