Tom Brady will be suspended

The idea of him NOT being involved is plain stupid. No one on that team would ever alter something affecting his play without consulting him or following his orders.
I wouldn't be surprised if the penalty is severe. He did lie to the commissioner about it and an example will probably be made. Look for multi-game suspension since money has no effect on him.
Maybe sentence him to play for Tampa Bay for 3 games.

he needs jail!

Just a slap on the wrist, that is a joke really if he gets only 2 games. That isn't any deterrent from stopping anybodyEstimates have been all over the map. My feeling is he will wind up with two games, whether that is the initial discipline handed out or whether he is hit with four and ends up with two after an appeal..Comment

This was a total sting operation from what I hear. Brady is guilty of course but I bet every QB does something similar. They just wanted to catch the Pats because they have a history of cheating.

I think many pro athletes push the boundaries and do everything they think they can get away with in order to gain an advantage of some kind. The Patriots have been a little more brazen about what they have done in the past and they have been caught so they are under the microscope.
In this case I think Brady will get a fine and will have to sit for a few games, but since they don't appear to have any actual evidence against him it won't be that harsh.
As someone who hates the Patriots, I would love to have them get caught paying those two guys who took the fall for this. That would bring the wrath of the NFL down on them.Comment
-
From what I saw on ESPN the Colts wrote a letter to the NFL before they played the Patriots telling the NFL exactly what was going to happen and they were sick of the Pat's cheating.

Tom and Hillary have a lot in common
The Wells Report notes that ?although Tom Brady appeared for a requested interview and answered questions voluntarily, he declined to make available any documents or electronic information (including text messages and emails) that we requested, even though those requests were limited to the subject matter of our investigation.?Comment

I don't disagree but why would the NFL go after its own marquee star? This is the same guy that the NFL created the Brady rule after. Seems weird they would go after him. And for undetinflaying balls, o don't know. But just saying.Comment

Those texts go back to like October of last year so at the very least it had been going on all last season, wasnt just the AFC championship. Not only does a softer ball make it easier to throw and catch but it makes it easier to not fumble, and the Pats had the least number of fumbles in the NFL. I think he should be suspended for at least a season, wont happen though cause its Brady.Comment

Not the NFL but the other NFL teams and owners sick of the Pats cheating and getting slaps on the wrist. The Colts, Rams, Ravens...a lot of teams have problems with the Patriots. But because of what you just said is why the NFL stonewalled this for months. The NFL is in a PR bind but they've proven time and again they don't give a shit about public opinion, only profit.
So I'm betting on a fine and two games tops exactly because it's Brady. Anyone else they'd be out many more games. My Affiliate Programs:

They would do it to prove that nobody is off limits. As many people as there are that love Brady and the Pats there are many MANY more NFL fans that hate them and think they are cheaters. I would be shocked if they suspend him for more than a few games because they will want to send a message that cheating won't tolerated and that will quiet some of the Brady haters, but, like you said, he is a marquee player so they won't risk benching him for too long.Comment

If the ball is so grippable when slightly underinflated, why not set the regulation inflation to that level? Wouldn't it make the game better to have the quarterbacks getting a better grip, and receivers being able to hold on to strong passes better. I think it's a big deal being made out of nothing.
As far as Brady goes...no one ever seems to mention the fact that a guy whose career is spent handling footballs knows exactly when there's less air in the ball. He knew big time.

It is all subjective. Aaron Rodgers (QB for the Packers) has said that he prefers the balls to be fully inflated and would even over-inflate them if he could. He said he has big hands and can easily grip the ball so having the ball be firm helps him control the throw better. If the ball is so grippable when slightly underinflated, why not set the regulation inflation to that level? Wouldn't it make the game better to have the quarterbacks getting a better grip, and receivers being able to hold on to strong passes better. I think it's a big deal being made out of nothing.

So if they decreased the air pressure in all the balls I would guess a good number of QB's would complain.
Perhaps Brady just has dainty hands.

I'm not a huge football fan but when this scandal first happened, my first thought was "don't the refs handle/touch the ball after every play?".
Yes, fewer illegal immigrants working equates to more job opportunities for American citizens.

They do, but the difference between what the deflated balls felt like and what a normally inflated ball feels like is very subtle. It could be easy to miss.Comment

I can imagine that's true... it just struck me as odd that if it's enough to be an advantage, it seems like an official handling the ball after every play would also notice at some point. If
Not, then it can't be much of an advantage it would seem (though it may be illegal).

i suppose. it seems to me owners would deal with other owners on matters like this. it's a close-knit small group, there's nothing in it for any of them to have this sort of public drama. Not the NFL but the other NFL teams and owners sick of the Pats cheating and getting slaps on the wrist. I am surprised by all of this... I don't know much about professional football, but I just assumed that all of the footballs were maintained by the referees. I thought this was the case for all professional sports.Herschel Savage

the important thing here is it's gonna suck extra hard being a Pats fan going forward. they will always be the underdog in any verbal tussling they get into with other team's fans . even when they are winning, which they most certainly will continue doing. yeah, well, your team's a cheater, that's why they're winning.Comment
-
The teams select the footballs they want to use during the game then give them to the refs for inspection. The refs then give them back to the teams shortly before kickoff. It is during that small window of time after the inspection and before the game starts that they were deflated. You would think once the teams gave the balls to the refs they would inspect them, approve them, then keep them to make sure they weren't tampered with.Comment

I really don't know how much of an advantage it could be, but even it is a minor advantage that helps them complete an extra pass or two that they might not have with a regularly inflated ball that could be enough to change the outcome of the game.I can imagine that's true... it just struck me as odd that if it's enough to be an advantage, it seems like an official handling the ball after every play would also notice at some point.
