North America is continent.
About looking at the map; one of the most important points were the map distortion. There is no map on flat form, that shows everything correctly. You can't just look at normal map and judge sizes based on that. Especially when you are looking different places north-south wise. In sailing these projection errors are calculated on the map, so that you can take it into account. Usually the distortion is so that objects near equator looks smaller and objects near poles larger. Thus for example Africa looks smaller than it is and US larger than it is. Or if you want to apply this to North America; Mexico looks smaller than it is and Canada larger than it is.

Africa is still larger than all of North America, but they didn't compare that. They compared an entire continent to one country. Like comparing all of North America with Nigeria.
