no baloney here either, when i do eat a sandwich it's peanut butter and sugar-free jam on ezekiel bread, or french toast ezekiel bread have you tried it? it's delicious and super healthy with none of the downsides of refined bread. i usually have some on stock.

same here, but I'm not so dumb or myopic as to think that it's 'easy' to get out of the poverty trap. If anyone has never been truly poor you have no idea what it's like, and seemingly even if you have, if you're one of those who has a decent brain and can get out of it, that means everyone else can too. In recent years kids are being told that the only way to get a good job is to go to college and some of them rack up a huge amount of debt for a degree that will not really help them land a good job right out of college.
Another thing we have to take into consideration is that the economy sucked (and still isn't great). So a lot of kids got out of high school and went to college because they thought they likely couldn't get a good job right out of high school. They hoped the economy would improve while they were in school. Now we have a huge influx of college graduates, many of which have semi-useless degrees, and they are flooding the market and still unable to find those good jobs.
If a person wants to study something that requires a degree or they just want a degree in general, there are plenty of ways to get the degree without getting much debt if they are willing to do the research and take the steps needed to get it done.Comment

One thing that always stands out to me is how various companies are allowed to bill the poor for being poor. For example, the local utility company in my city. If you get a shut off notice on your light bill they will hang the notice on your door. They will also charge you $25 for that door hanger notice and you must pay that in addition to your bill to keep the lights on. Credit card companies do it all the time. If you are late with a payment they increase your rates or charge late fees. A friend of mine that lives in an apartment showed me the sign that hangs over the rent payment drop on the office. It says if you pay after 5pm on the 5th of the month you must include $100 late fee. His rent is $690 a month so they are basically hitting you with a 14% late fee even if you are just a few hours late.
I understand that they supposedly do this as a way to encourage people to pay their bills on time, but all it does is make it more difficult for people to pay future bills. Once you get into debt and start that debt spiral, unless you find a way to increase your income you are slowly going to drown in it.Comment

It isn't on the colleges who sell these degrees. It is on those who buy them and those who convince people they need them. You are right in that parents need to educate their kids. If your kid wants to go into college and study Greek medieval literature and their career path doesn't include them teaching Greek medieval literature, then parents need to have a frank conversation and tell the kid that degree is not going to help them. The same can be said for high school teachers. They need to stop telling every kid to get a bachelors degree and instead teach kids that there are other options out there for them and help them find their way in those directions.Comment

I have a friend who was so scared of his theology degree and getting out of school, he actually spent half of his life in school until he got his PHD in ancient Hebrew scrolls. He now teaches class in some Central Mississippi A&M University I mean if this was some recognized school with anthropology and biblical studies department I can see that, but he is in the middle of nowhere with 30+ idiots sleeping through his bullshit lectures.

For sure. When I say upward mobility I don't mean that everyone can be a millionaire. I mean that everyone can get enough of an education and a decent job and can live a decent middle class lifestyle. Some people will go on to more than that, but anyone can drag themselves out of poverty if they try hard enough. By that I also don't mean just getting another job. I mean working towards getting a better, higher paying job.
In the end if you want to be rich and have a site like youporn you need to be in the right place at the right time and do the right things. Those with vision and the courage to pursue those visions are the ones that ultimately make it big.Comment

Try to imagine they aren't you, with your unique skills, qualities, and mindset. Try remembering what it was like in the time between being ok, and pulling yourself out of it, and think of all the people who would have looked at you and the situation you were in, and dismissed it with a 'I have no sympathy'. Like I said earlier, it's easy to forget what it was like when you were in it. Think of the help you *did* get (anyone who says they had literally none is full of shit...) no matter how small it seemed at the time, and ask yourself if you've done the same for someone else today/this week/month/year who doesn't want a handout, but some direction/foot on the ladder.

I think they need to use some sort of practical training for kids picking their major. At first I was doing finance in college and got my wakeup call during summer internship. Everyone was thinking stocks, NY stock exchange, mutual funds. Fuck that, put on your Sears three piece suite and go sell 401K plans to 40 year olds. I watched those guys make million calls, set appointments, drive to boonies and then come back next day hangover and pissed because Baba wasn't getting that he needs to invest something in order to get it back later. This was my wakeup call. If colleges put those Hebrew scrollers behind the desk and make then look at toilet paper for 9 hours through magnifying glass perhaps they would get the idea.Comment

Here's the thing about that. I can go to just about any cell phone provider and get an iphone or a basic smartphone (neither the newest model) for free and pay around $40-$50 per month for the service. I just looked on the website for my local phone company and to get a basic phone line I would have to pay around $35 a month. So having a smartphone is not a sign of wealth.
Another option is that I could spend about $100 on a phone and use a carrier like Ting and spend maybe $20-$25 a month on service.
I would agree that is someone can afford to go plunk down $600 for a new phone then maybe they don't need assistance, but having a basic smartphone is not really any more expensive than having a home phone.Comment

He's displaying the kind of misplaced anger poor people suffer if they do anything except
appear to be broken souls in public.
For all we know all the phones could be turned off; but these people are so paranoid
about looking broke that they pretend to use the phone to look important.
I confess that I carried a cell phone for a month back in the 1990's and it was never turned on.
It was in LA and I had meetings to go to.

I found it useful even when turned off because it was heavy enough to beat the shit out of any attacker.
