A Texas Woman Might Use The 'Religious Freedom' Law In The Most Amazing Way Possible

Joan Cheever said police infringed her religious freedom when they fined her $2,000 for feeding the homeless in San Antonio.

As she'd done every Tuesday for years, Cheever was giving out free meals from her food truck in a public park last week when police rolled up and started writing a ticket. Right away, she told the officers they were burdening her free exercise of religion, according to an on-the-scene report from Texas Public Radio. Cheever pointed to the federal and state Religious Freedom Restoration Acts -- the same kinds of laws that caused massive controversy in Indiana and Arkansas last month over concerns they would allow religious business owners to discriminate against the LGBT community.

"One of the police officers said, 'Ma'am if you want to pray, go to church,'" Cheever told the local NBC affiliate last week. "And I said, 'This is how I pray, when I cook this food and deliver it to the people who are less fortunate.'"

Tell me where you can prepare food and serve it to the general public legally without following all the health and safety guidelines and laws, without proper licensing and permits and without being in a place where its legal to do so? Then tell me when and where its A-OK for a restaurateur facing health and safety violations to explain "this is how I pray, therefore, i am not subject to your rules and regulations and laws". Does she have a right to poison people?

So, I assume she doesn't just own a food truck as a hobby and it is a business therefore following the rules and regulations required by such a business including any applicable health codes. Perhaps she was in a place where she would need a permit to actually operate said food truck, but I'm not too worried about her poisoning people.

The reason these laws exist isn't out of fear for the safety of the homeless people being fed, it is because if it happens on a regular basis then those homeless people may start to congregate in a place where some people may not want them. Our government, in its infinite stupidity, then decides the way to solve this problem is to create laws to keep people from feeding the homeless as opposed to maybe putting that energy towards helping those homeless get some food so everyday citizens didn't have to feed them.
