Singapore has 20 cases of killer pneumonia
SINGAPORE, March 17 (UPI) -- Singapore's Ministry of Health said Monday that four new patients with so-called severe acute respiratory syndrome had been hospitalized, bringing the total of known cases to 20. The ministry advised against all non-essential travel to Hong Kong, Hanoi and Guangdong province in China. Besides three initial cases, all the other 17 patients had been in close contact with other infected patients. Of these, 10 were relatives or friends and seven were medical staff who had helped treat the patients.

DOH warns against trivial visits to China

Department of Health Director-General Twu Shing-jer £¨Í¿ÐÑÕÜ£©yesterday urged the public not to make nonessential visits to China, Vietnam and Hong Kong, in response to a recent outbreak of atypical pneumonia in Asian countries, including Taiwan where three cases have been reported.
Twu made the statement at an unscheduled press conference held immediately after his return from the United States yesterday morning. The director-general, dismissing criticisms that he was not concerned about the occurrence of the disease on the island, urged the public not to panic but nonetheless to be cautious.
