Events Van Halen - live on Jimmy Kimmel [vid]

Not sure how I missed this - but just tripped on it on YT earlier.

If you can tune out Roth's vocals and just listen to EVH's guitar work - he's really back on his game here. Went through hell and came out the other end lookin' and sounding good.

    Full show...

douchebag dave cut his nose on his gay microphone the first take of this song. I think he just put a big band aid on and came out and did a second take. I recently found out that Van Halen 1984 had little if none input from Dave. No wonder it is such a good album.

Watching it now....Dave looks and moves around like he needs to retire to his condo in Hallandale Beach, Florida. OY Vey!

30 years later it still blows my mind how they could put out the most commercially successful album of their career (1984)...and split up immediately after. I'll never wrap my head around that one.

Agreed. He looks off-balance much of the time - his moves are dorky and not choreographed in any way...just awkward. Like he doesn't know what to do with his arms and legs and just flails around like a marionette. And the stupid smile, jeezus man - like a gay Howdy Doody. His vocals are so off-key...it's embarrassing. Dave's out there performing for...Dave. Not the audience.

I thought the show was great if just to watch Eddie in good health and top form.

David Lee Roth is 60 years old. He's allowed to slow things down a little.

Roth is definitely off but still my favorite of VH singers so I'll pretend he's in tune.

I've always liked Eddie, always disliked David. As the years have past that gap has grown. Roth used to be a douche he's pathetic now.

Dave's always been that way "live".

I saw Van Halen open for The Rolling Stones at the Orange Bowl stadium in 1981 in Florida.
And David Lee was just running around talking and singing off-key on every song.

I saw him when he had his solo career in Augusta Georgia in 1991. And again, he sang nothing like he does in the studio. Just a bunch of preening and running around singing off-key and talking through the songs.

I'd say he's a lot better "live" now than he ever was back in Van Halen's glory years.

It's weird, because he sounds great in the studio. And when they first got back together a couple of years ago they put out some videos of themselves just sitting around playing some songs acoustically. And he sounded really, really good singing. No microphones, no effects.

But for some reason, when he gets out in front of a big crowd, he becomes "Diamond Dave" and just can't sing.

Which is a shame. He really influenced a lot of "metal" (not death metal) vocalists back in the day.
Seemed like every singer in a hair metal band in the 1980's were trying to figure out how to do that cool tri-tone metal scream he did on the VH albums back in the day.

Watching his cheesy live act it's hard to remember that he was once thought of as a great "heavy metal" vocalist.

But I do have to say...I went and saw them live on their last tour.
Eddie sounded like God on guitar (because he is). And even though Dave was as "bad" as always on vocals...it was still really cool to see him back with the band singing all those old Van Halen songs with Eddie again.

                              Nostalgia factor is powerful.

I wasn't living in Vegas when he did that lounge act here in 1995.

I also read on Wiki that he worked as an EMT in New York in the late 1990's! I never knew that.

Sad with the girl obviously planted in the audience for that routine as well.

But you have to give them props for getting out there to make some money from their audience now that they have retirement funds and can afford the deluxe ticket package and a photo with the band before they all DIE!!

You don't seem to have a very cheery outlook on life!

I guess that they could all just go home and wait another 20 or 30 years to just "DIE!!"

Or maybe they are living their lives to the fullest? I think that's probably the better choice.

Agreed. That was the thing I missed most during the Hagar era...they only did 2 of the old Van Halen tracks in concert (Panama and Jump) with Sammy.

I recall a quote from Roth around the time Sammy joined the band. "Sammy will have to get out there and do Jump every night. I'll never have to sing a Sammy Hagar tune."

Well...I figure I've lived long enough to see the Eagles reunion (Hell Freezes Over tour) where all the guys played their solo hits together with the Eagles classics. Maybe I'll be around long enough to see Hagar and Roth together with Michael Anthony and Van Halen someday.

As long as they allow walkers into the arena.

Hey here's the acoustic session I was talking about from a couple of years ago.
Check out how good Dave sounds on this and then compare him singing "Panama" on Kimmel.
Just for some reason...when he gets a big crowd in front of him, he can't sing (or even seem to keep time). But just the band acoustically he sounds great:

Check out how good Dave sounds on this and then compare him singing "Panama" on Kimmel.
Just for some reason...when he gets a big crowd in front of him, he can't sing (or even seem to keep time). But just the band acoustically he sounds great:
I watched all the acoustic 'downtown' sessions when they posted them - and agree they sounded really great. But I don't know what Roth's problem is in front of a live crowd. I saw them in 1984 at the Gardens in Toronto and although the concert was awesome due to Eddie's guitar...a lot of the songs were butchered by Roth - almost like he had contempt for the keyboards or something, I dunno.

I guess that they could all just go home and wait another 20 or 30 years to just "DIE!!"

Or maybe they are living their lives to the fullest? I think that's probably the better choice.

BB King is 89 years old and still plays gigs. I'm not gonna tell him to stop because you think he's too old and living in an artificial fantasy.
