I don't think I've ever had it in my life up until about a year ago, and now I get the cunt all the time. At least I think it's heartburn - that annoying feeling halfway down your throat and upper chest after a meal - is that heartburn? And is it common as you get older (I'm 43 in May)?

You need a visit to your local GP - It's probably heartburn, but there's a list of other problems it could be...
If it's bad at night try laying on your left side, it'll help if it's an acid problem..... -
Acid reflux probably, what have you changed in your diet when it started ?

Does it burn or do you feel full? Indigestion is more annoying, full feeling, lump at the bottom of your esophagus, heartburn just kind of burns. I don't know why, but when I quit smoking 10 years ago I never got heartburn again, and I had it pretty regularly.Comment

Fuck all that. I've had a serious ear problem now for around 8 years, operations blahblah, and every time I see the doc/consultant etc they do the usual shit and I ace the heart rate, blood pressure etc. Recently had a bunch of shit tested to see if I was diabetic while trying to score some free viagra, blood tests all came back a-ok. I smoke, and eat utter crap as my diet, but show as 100% healthy on every fucking test I've ever had.Comment

kinda burns, but doesn't... not sure actually if it's that acid reflux thing, I've always guessed acid reflux as being that thing where you get a bit of 'bile' or whatever it is go back up your throat. I don't get that, if that's indeed what acid reflux is, so I'm guessing it's heartburn. It might even be indigestion, I've no idea what each of those actually feels like, to know which it is I've been experiencing the last year or so.Does it burn or do you feel full? I actually started on the ecigs properly around a year or so ago, so smoke ~60 - 80 cigs a week instead of 20 - 40 a day now, so that's my only real 'lifestyle change', though I can't really see smoking less cigs as a cause of whatever this is. I kinda assumed it was just an age thing, like hairs in the nostrils, but have it tonight and it popped in my head to ask here, as it was quicker than googling 'what is heartburn'.Comment

I've never understood people who think asking on a message board at 1am if heartburn is an old man's disease amongst a group of people, a few of whom I know to be around my age group, is like asking for actual medical advice. You think I've been in agony all this time, not knowing what to do about it, worrying myself silly, and finally plucked up the courage to ask for actual medical advice on here?
Like I'm asking because I'm in pain rather than what I said earlier when I posted "I kinda assumed it was just an age thing, like hairs in the nostrils, but have it tonight and it popped in my head to ask here, as it was quicker than googling 'what is heartburn'."?
Does that sound like a person in dire need of medical help? Or does it sound like someone who maybe posted in between running tasks?
Go to a fucking stop-me-from-being-an-up-my-own-ass-prick self-help group.
And that's without even getting on to the fact that there's literally zero harm from asking about heartburn to see if anyone else has it, as opposed to asking how I can cure my leukemia. How about if I get a cold, am I ok to ask for 'medical advice' on here about that, or should I rush my ass off to a fucking doctor?

Nah, I'm apparently spot on with weight/height/BMI according to the medical geniuses down at the doctor's who are creaming their pants at the thought of some guy saying he gets what he thinks might be heartburn, but doesn't know as he's never really had it, though the truth is if anything I could use putting on 15lbs.
I'll tap up the doc tomorrow for 40 minutes of his time and a bunch more blood tests and no doubt an ECG before risking listening to that quack L-Pink and walking the dangerous path of getting some Tums.

For me indigestion feels like there is food at the bottom of my throat and I can't get it to go all the way down no matter how many times I swallow. (no puns please)
Drink milk for the "burn" if it helps, then it's heartburn. A couple tums will help.Comment

tbh I take zero pills, never been one for them. I'll wake up fine tomorrow and forget all about it until 3 or 4 weeks time when I get it next, it's certainly not something I'll be going to the docs about, and I seriously doubt I'll even bother with the Tums suggestion tbh as that would mean fucking around going to the chemist, and waiting in line etc (though thanks LP), it just isn't that much of a problem, was more curiosity and a time-filler than anything else, and that wanting to know if it was common once you hit 40-odd.Comment
-
ok doesn't sound like indigestion then. I drink tons of milk anyway, so have had my usual fridge raids tonight, it doesn't do much except for about 5 or 10 minutes, though that does suggest it's just heartburn then. Case closed
And sorry for biting Martin, didn't mean to come over as a dick, it's just that I am one so I can't help myself

I had it for a couple of years. Tums isn't a cure, but you will feel better for a while if you take some.

Haven't read all the replies, sounds like reflux and 100% reflects your diet.
Stop eating fatty foods and drinking and you will not suffer from it anymore.
Also not sure of the equivalent in your country, however here we have QUIK-EZE and it is almost an instant soother of this problem.
I use to smoke / drink / eat all the fatty foods and suffered from reflux for year. It wasn't worth it, watch your diet and you will not have to endure reflux.
EDIT
Just read you're a smoker, that is going to contribute to it tooTripleXPrint on Megan Fox

I know what I'm about to type sounds like a crock of shit, but I'm 100% serious.
When its pretty bad, try swallowing a tea spoon of vinegar. Just the normal 'sarsons' you have in the cupboard for chips - Nothing fancy...
It does actually work. Something to do with the acid in the vinegar neutralising the acid inside you. Obviously I'm not medically trained, but speaking from experience it did actually work for me

The best long term solution for this is to change your diet and stop smoking.
The short term solution for this is zantac, prilosec and things of that nature.
If you do not take care of it, that can become serious. I have had it where the symptoms where the classic burning of the throat and all of that yoke. However I also had it where it was more mild on the initial symptoms, but it caused much bigger problems like sleep apnea and vocal chords seizing up, which is very scary.
The acid reflux would bubble up your throat at night, get into your sinuses and you would have this lump of crud in the back of your throat you could never get rid of. I had a cough that lasted for literally YEARS and they could not figure out what caused it blaming it on a nasal drip or some other b.s.. At one point they thought I was asthmatic and gave me that medicine or spray. None worked.
Eventually I received a referral to an allergist who correctly diagnosed it in 10 minutes. I did not believe this dude. After all, 8 other doctors of 4-5 years could not get it right. What were the odds. He gave me some medicine, tried it, in 36-48 hours the crud gone, not more choking/stop breathing in my sleep, could taste again. It was crazy.
Anyway, acid reflux is looked at as a nuisance, but you really need to be careful as it can become very serious. Especially where the vocal chords seizing up where you stop breathing in your sleep and have to jump out of bed, adrenaline racing, and try to calm yourself mentally so that your throat opens back up before you pass out is terrifying.

rantidine (zantac) works well for this old guy------buy it over the counter in drug stores and some grocery stores. I went to my doctor before taking it just to make certain that the Zantac wouldn't mask something else.
Now, if only I could do something about waking up needing to pee but having to first get the erection to go limp:-).
Seriously, see you doctor to insure you don't have something that he/she can find and treat.Comment

I started getting it bad in my 30's. I went to a doctor and had a scope done etc. Found out I had an ulcer. My doc told me when people get heartburn its their body trying to tell them its time for a change.
Smoking, Alcohol, Fatty foods can all be a cause. Basically anything you enjoy....Have Chargebacks? Send me a message.

No, he's right... tums is a bandaid solution. That will fix it fast, breads don't digest well and upset bowels over years of eating them often. Even if you cut them out for a month or so and add them back in moderation it should work.
are you actually looking for advice or you just looking for some asshole to tell you what you want to hear and pretend that is right instead?
that does work for sure. but again, bandaid solution.I know what I'm about to type sounds like a crock of shit, but I'm 100% serious.

... just to add, I wasn't looking for any advice really. I was literally looking for an answer to 'is it an old man's disease', out of curiosity. I get it about once a month, if it's even heartburn, and it causes me no pain, just a mild annoyance. tbh I wish I'd never asked, if it becomes a real issue then I'll go to the doc's, just like anything.Comment

It comes and goes when you're older. Drink some cold water and see if it goes away. Then try alka seltzer to knock it back.Comment

Nexium.
My acid reflux was so bad last year that I had to sleep on my left side every night. Nexium was a godsend.
Try to eat less fiber. High-fiber foods tend to be hard to digest and therefore sit in your stomach for longer which can aggravate the reflux. On the other hand, if you don't have acid reflux, try to to eat more fiber because it makes you feel full for longer.

It will get worse, if you want to be smart about it, get it treated / diagnosed now. Trust me, I suffered this for a very long time and i'm younger than you... just to add, I wasn't looking for any advice really. Not an old man's disease. I had heartburn from years 20 - 40. Changed my diet and haven't taken a tum's/whatever since and year 50 was last year.Comment

That will help so that you do not have to take pills, and is best LONG TERM solution.
Cut out cola, booze, smoking, processed foods (i.e. sodium), chocolate, eating close to bed time, etc..Comment

I was at the gym yesterday and some guy was in the jacuzzi putting his face underwater and doing some weird breathing. Like breathing out with his nose I guess making bubbles.
I was wondering wtf he was doing, he did it several times.
I thought maybe he was trying to kill himself.(Very ineffective) So I asked him what he was doing.
He told me he has chest pain, and he has trouble sleeping at night like on his side.
He's not sure what it's from, maybe allergies or stress.
But I guess what he was doing was helping with the pain?
It's pretty interesting because my mother has this same problem. Shes been having chest pain for at least a month now. Shw saw a doctor but it wasn't much help. She has trouble sleeping as well.
It's a bit odd that I have ran into two people now with the same issue.
I really hope you all get better, it sounds like a real pain.
My mother is scared she's going to have a heart attack she just got life insurance last week.Comment
