I live in Manhattan (NYC) and, at least among me and my circles, we relate much more to the cultures of various European cities than we do to the various local and regional cultures in the US and Canada. Personally, I feel much more at home in places like Paris, London, Prague, and Copenhagen than I would in places like Kentucky, Kansas, Upstate NY, or other middle American locales.

Partially agree... of course I give at least three fucks... it's terrible... And I'll make sure the people in the circle I do have (some) influence on will hear about this. And I'm going to do everything I can to prevent my kids from doing shit like that. Teach 'em tolerance, and teach 'em there will be haters out there, no matter what you do... but that's where my power ends... If everybody would teach their "inner circle" tolerance - and the fact that you don't have to be the same to be able to live together - eventually those circles will overlap and make a difference...
I'm a programmer, I spent my life dissecting big problems in chunks you can solve... Funny how some tricks of the trade apply to real life as well...

I've been there The USA is a very racist place. And to be fair, it's racist from both sides. Try walking as a white in Harlem or some parts of the Bronx or Detroit for example. I haven't did that but heard a lot of terrible stories from others. My city is much bigger than NYC and it's a home for 100's of nations, but we have no "black", "white", "yellow", "green", "blue" and whatever districts. Course we have racists too, but they are marginals. The 282 article of criminal code is very popular here. So if I insult someone by a skin color or national origin even in the internet board, I can easily get a prison time for that.
