Why do so many keep living where the weather is so shitty almost year round?

    Hi all,

Almost every day of the year, I see major weather effecting so many here in the US. It is always up North and mostly in the northeast. It's insane what you all endure to live in these places. It is hard for me to understand because except for 4 years that I spent going to college in Boston, I have lived only in Florida and California. Here in SoCal, we have beautiful almost every day of the year. Yes we are in a drought but the weather is almost always amazing.

My questions is why? Why do you live there? Not being able to leave because of financial reason or because all of your family tree is there is one thing. However, it's not like those cities or suburbs are so unique that you can't find beautiy in a warmer weather region. Why stay in laces like Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Philly that are not only shitty cities for the most part but have unbelievably terrible weather too.

I made myself a promise a long time ago that I would never live in a place without palm trees or that you would not want to vacation twice.... It's worked out very well so far.

I'm not trying to offend anyone here, I'm just really curious as to why?

I'm in the UK and I'm starting to wonder that myself.

We had 2 weeks of warm weather last year.

It's actually been a ridiculously mild winter here in NJ. Barely any snow so far. A few dustings nothing more. Spring will be here before we know it.

I live here now because I am bound by custody agreement, figuring out if I will stay once I am not longer forced will be interesting. I'd like to go someplace a little warmer.

I only need Spring, Summer and DEFINITELY fall. Winter can go away with global warming.

I moved to Kuala Lumpur for a business opportunity, not the weather. But after one year of living in a city that never goes below 70F, I can say it would have to be a hell of an opportunity to get me to move back to anyplace that has any type of winter.

Why not? It is my "shitty weather" ecological niche.

"Pussies" live more south, so here is much more room to live.

If I lived south of the 49th, I could see your point, but seeing as I live on a rock off the east cost of Canada, that's not an option; however, I did spend 3 winters racing horses in Fla., and I can see your point there.

While we may have some of the harshest weather on the planet come winter (150k winds and 25 cm of white stuff in the works), but no property taxes, no locking of the front door, leaving your keys in the ignition while you do your thing at the general store are things I'll miss when I do decide to leave what they call God's land.

I live in Toronto and love it. Sure the winters can be shitty but the spring, summer And fall are great. Also, it's not just about the weather Toronto is a world class city with amazing restaurants, nightlife, arts and culture etc. for a city the size of TO it is also extremely safe.

I used to live up north, but now I'm used to nice weather. Unfortunately all the crazy people like nice weather too. So it's a trade off, nice warm sunny days, but you have to dodge a bullet now and then.

Want to know what's really fucked? I live in Florida and the beautiful horse farm portion of central Kentucky. Because of some money making opportunities I've got the rotation wrong the last few years. I've spent summers in hot humid Florida and right now I'm in Kentucky and it's 13 degrees outside.

                                          We have family here.
Both the wife and I have good employment with benefits.
Sometimes the snow and ice makes for good scenic photos (ok, weak reason...but valid, lol).
In the summer months, Niagara Region is a gorgeous place.

Plus it's fun to watch an influx of 2 million tourists acting like idiots.

Harsh winters make our summer that much more enjoyable. Sure, I wouldn't mind spending more time in a palm tree locale - but having the exact same weather day in and day out would get monotonous after awhile I'd think.

i like seasons. there are a lot of fun things to do in the winter that you can't do without ice and snow. sure, its sucks sometimes but i can't really imagine living somewhere where the weather never really changes.

why do people live in California? it's a desert that requires trillions of gallons of water to be piped in and is in the middle of an epic drought with potential for earthquakes and more.

                                                  There's your answer.

                                                  Money, job opportunities, demand, economy.

Edit: and I just wasted my 18,000th post on this.
This more than anything.. FL has very limited "good" jobs as almost everything is shitty service industry and low paying (a right to work state). This means either you become an engineer to work for a govt contractor @ NASA or one of the tech firms (which always layoff when budget cuts happen) or you have to run your own business.

Meanwhile in New England even a recent high scool graduate can be making $15 to 18 bucks an hour after a couple of years, with on the job training doing production work or something similar. In FL that same HS grad will be making $9 or $10 working for McDonnalds or Walmart.

Last year was brutal here this year not so bad just one crazy Superbowl snow dump. I vacation in Florida every year as most of my family left here a long time ago for the Tampa/Bradenton area. I complain about cold here and my family complains about heat down there so same shit. My uncle actually bought 3 lots in the Knoxville, TN mountains and is building cabins so he could leave Florida in the summer. I could possibly move down there as well as I get older. Weather is nicer down there but it's definitely no Chicago, different lifestyle. Shit looks better cause you're on vacation but once ya move there same thing everywhere has it's advantages/disadvantages.

We spent our summers chopping trees to provide firewood, fall raking leaves, winters shoveling snow, and during Spring we would unfuck the damage. What a massive waste of time.

One winter I discovered my entire morning was spent shoveling snow, and my great reward was a warm meal for lunch, and then I spent the rest of the afternoon shoveling again. The following day was more of the same - two days shoveling snow. Fuck that. I vowed to move to a place where it never snows and to never return to NJ. Decades later I couldn't be happier.

I've seen snow twice in the past thirty years - Once because I had to return home to NJ for a funeral and once I drove "up north" here in California just to sledding for the day. I'm fine with that.

My parents are getting up there in age and I do not want to receive a terrible phone call and have the guilt of not having seen them for six months or more. I try to come back at least once every eight weeks. Were it not for my parents, my visits back north would more spread out and much shorter in duration.
