      The title is a bit missleading. For example I haven't been voluteered to die in anywhere. Now the title suggests that they go to Mars and die shortly after.

      Those people are volunteered to go to Mars and to stay there (populate). Dying is just the same outcome than it would be around here on Earth.

                                                                                                                                              I don't think it would be that bad, the people they select won't be the brainless chimps of GFY, they'll be gone over psychologically and physically with a fine tooth comb many times. I'm sure some will succumb to the stress but most will do what they were sent to do and die stoically.

                                                                                                                                              Now if they had only GFY to choose from, that rocket ship isn't even getting off the launch pad - the sound of crying would drown out the rocket engine, the smell of shit being thrown against the walls and deposited in their spacesuits ..........

Also it wont always be a "one way" trip if they can successfully colonize Mars..                                                                                                                                                                                   The Gravity on Mars is only 38% that of what it is on Earth meaning yes sperm will still swim, much faster actually and it will take much less fuel and thrust power to exit Mar's atmosphere.

                                                                                                                                                                                  The biggest hurdle to colonizing Mars is not having people live there, but how to make it profitable. If they can't make it profitable, then it will just be some missions and test bases and then we lose interest just like the moon. We lost interest because it was just a see if we can do it thing. Now days however we have the private sector forging ahead in the space industry and they are doing it for "profits" and once they figure out a way to make profit from Mars (which will mean return trips to Earth) they will have people successfully living there.

                                                                                                                                                                                              I think it is a really interesting idea, but unfortunately I think its doomed to fail for several reasons.

                                                                                                                                                                                              #1. They will be forced to live inside, and will not be able to survive outside. No air, no water, too cold, etc.

                                                                                                                                                                                              #2. They can't bring enough food and water to live very long. There are not enough resources on Mars to live on, and there is not enough time or resources to create / grow / resources to live on.

                                                                                                                                                                                              #3. If the flight itself doesn't kill them by exposure to radiation, they might just end up going insane being cooped up together for so long. If the scientists make a mistake on the psychiatric evaluation on one or more of the astronauts, it will mean disaster for the entire crew even before they arrive.

                                                                                                                                                                                              And what happens when they get there? Only more cramped living space.

                                                                                                                                                                                              It would be wonderful and beautiful to step onto the ground of Mars and explore but their time to do this would be so limited.

                                                                                                                                                                                              Even worse, there's no real reason to send these humans to Mars right now. If we wait a while, new engines will take people there much faster, and do so with a return trip plan too. Imagine going to Mars knowing that if you just wait 10 years or so, you could go, do much more, and come back to Earth.

                                                                                                                                                                                              The thought of finally getting there only to live in a bubble and know that death is coming for you in months instead of years will driving anyone crazy. If they have live cams for the event, it will be the most watched, saddest and most tragic reality show in history.

It's not a send them to the little space capsule and see what happens 20 years later. They will send a first group to see if humans can actually survive and thrive then more people will be sent assuming it's all a go.
                                                                                                                                                                                                  the problem with that is if things don't go right they will be left there, possibly without enough resources. whether there is sex or not there (which is idiotic to even discuss) is beside the point. It only works with follow up missions with more people, more supplies.
