The President has ALWAYS been saluted by marines. But NEVER returned a salute until Ronald Reagan started doing it in 1981.
Then Bush 1, Clinton, and Bush 2 all did it to be "cool" like Reagan.
Now every goddamn President until the end of time has to do it?

Just read that even Pres. Eisenhower who was the General in charge of the troops during World War 2 NEVER saluted military personnel as President.
It was thought to be improper.
If a President who was one of the greatest military leaders of all time didn't salute the marines on guard (or any other military personnel EXCEPT when awarding a military honor medal), then why on Earth should Pres. Obama (or any other President) do it?
It's dumb shit like this that really shows how easily distracted the American people are and how easy our society is manipulated by the govt. and the media.-Robbie

The reason I'm calling it a "dumbass salute" is because the President is ranked higher than that marine. So he isn't supposed to salute back.
You don't salute an enlisted man OR an officer who is lower in rank than you.
The only time an officer in the military or any President before Reagan EVER saluted a military person was when presenting them with the Medal Of Honor.

I didn't salute much in the Navy, but remember I was on a Submarine, so I didn't wear a hat very often.
Robbie, Officers are suppose to salute lower rank and enlisted personal after they get saluted.
The president is not in the military, so I see no reason he has to salute military personal, but as leader and cheif I also believe it shows respect for the military, which every president should have!! Salute/not salute, the President of The United States should have an idea what the protocol actually is and stick with that. In our army higher ranking soldiers salute back; lower ranking salutes first and higher ranking salutes back. Unless the higher ranking sits in office chair or something like that (when you come into his office).
In battle conditions or in battle exercise there is no saluting or anything similar that would expose leaders.
I don't know about US.

The Salute is a sign of respect and recognition of the position the other person holds.
No wonder the most top ranking dont salute the grunts. The term "Cannon Fodder" came around for a reason. Its the lowest ranking and the ones that die first that deserve the salute from those that dont get their asses shot off.
