Rape in India ? Why it becomes a worldwide story

Rape is a terrible crime, a case where the victims are overwhelmingly women and the perpetrators overwhelmingly men. Every rape carries with it a personal story of trauma. To use statistics to speak about rape appears to dehumanize it into a number. Yet, when the mainstream news media is branding India into a ?rape capital?, it is worth a pause. Maria Wirth, a German émigré to India wrote on how she found German TV disproportionately reporting a rape incident in far-away India, while a local rape was a small inside item. Similarly, a rape in a Cab in New Delhi made it all the way into the New York Times while an estimated 700 rapes on that day in the US merited no mention. This begs the question?is disproportionate coverage of rape in India justified? Or is it driven by an agenda?

Because it helps sell advertisements for media and provides excellent opportunities for publicity crazy celebs/politicians/NGOs etc.
The whole brouhaha about gang rape a year ago was nothing more than a media frenzy.
It is a problem for a certain society, they need to fix it.

It's all because of misbalanced in their women and men population. Edit: Just googled for it. The US stats look really terrible. Here is a comparison graph:

Magenta: number of rape cases per 100,000 citizens in the USA
Yellow: number of rape cases and rape attempts per 100,000 citizens in Russia.

P.S. To whose who think I'm an American heater. I'm not. When I read about "700 rapes a day in the USA", I thought: WTF? This is impossible for a 1st world country and started to google the stats. When I found them, course I've compared them towards the rape stats in my country, which is a natural thing.

any insecurities on this matter ?

I bet that stats are the one thing, but in reality in Russia it could be like 3-5 times higher because not every victim goes to police....while in US - even touching the butt or saying some sweet word is counted as rape attempt haha

Because I was really shocked with "700 a day". If if was the UK, France or Germany I would be shocked too. But it was the USA. And course I compared it with Russia because it's my country. Don't you do the same when you see some country-related stats?

No, you can't. Rape is a very serious crime, so the bribe won't work (especially $100, which is just nothing). The only way to "get away" from a real prison time is to pay to the victim directly and ask her/him to take back the application. But it would cost you much more than $100... Perhaps you will have to sell your house. On the other hand, I think this method works in other countries too

Who told you that nonsense and why won't they go to police? As I told above, it's at least a sure way to make good money, so fake rape applications (along with road incident scams etc) are counted too.

Yes, of course. So I don't see any difference for European countries or the USA (Asian and Arabian countries is different story).

No, that's not a rape. That's a sexual harassment. From the comments to that graph, I see that US stats include actual rapes only (not the attempts).

P.S. Just tried to recall the rape cases I heard within my life and I remembered only two. One as in the middle of 80's when one 15 year old guy from my school has raped a 30 year old woman (he was sent to a prison for minors). Another was in 90's (the rapist was from from Caucasus). So I mean, it's a very rare crime here. There are no problems with sex in my country. Why rape if you can have it as much as you want by mutual agreement?

I'd be willing to guess a lot of countries would have way higher numbers if everything was accurately reported, like they try to do in USA. Latin America is rather machismo still and rape is brushed off as a joke in many places.
