Apple 'deeply offended' by BBC investigation

Apple has said it is "deeply offended" by a BBC investigation into conditions for workers involved in manufacturing its devices.

Rules on workers' hours, ID cards, dormitories, work meetings and juvenile workers were routinely breached, the Panorama programme witnessed.

In a staff email, senior Apple executive Jeff Williams said he knew of no other company doing as much as Apple to improve conditions.

But he added: "We can still do better."

Panorama's editor Ceri Thomas said he stood by the programme's journalism.

He said the team had found an exhausted workforce making Apple products in China, as well as children working in extremely dangerous tin mines in Bangka, Indonesia.

"While Apple did confirm earlier this year that it gets tin from Bangka, it had never been confirmed whether illegal tin was entering their supply chain," he said.

"We got the first evidence of this on our trip.

"We told Apple what we had found almost two months ago. Although Apple was happy to give us a non-attributable briefing, we were disappointed that the company wasn't prepared to explain its position on camera."

Hmmm
Normally whenever someone mentions "Apple" in this forum there's a slew of comments praising them.

All I can say is I visited an Apple store once.... I swear there was people in there with looks on their faces that gave me the impression that they would willing drink cyanide-laced kool-aid for Apple.

Between the cult like gaze of some of the fans and price... I left. I can make do with what my no-name 2nd hand junk.

I'm not defending Apple, but I'm pretty sure that's the case with most of the electronics made in China :|

I'll never understand why some people call Apple customers cultists, or sheeples, or whatever. They have good products, good marketing, and fantastic customer support, all creating brand loyalty and repeat business. Works for me.

Again it's just another computer. Some of these "Apple Fans" get more boogled eyed misty talking about a machine that's going to be obsolete in a year than they do about their own flesh and blood family.

Furthermore Achmed (no joke) the Arab that owns the computer store down the street from me can build me bigger and better computer for 33% of the cost compared to Apple. When there's a problem with my computer I can telephone Achmed and he answers the phone himself. If he can't talk me through the problem on the phone, then I drop it off the next morning and pick it up late afternoon. 99% of the time he doesn't charge me a dime for the repair. But if he actually has to replace a part, he gives me a great deal on it and the labor.

And surprising for all this GReaT CUstoMEr SErVIce that Achmed gives me... I still don't feel the need to convert to Islam or camp out in front of his store for 3 days.

I am not a blind "hater", but rather an objective one In some instances apple deserve some poking and in some - not.
And I am usually poking at brainwashed fanboys, not apple itself which I respect for great business/marketing

Companies and end users always have a moral responsibility for what or where they buy their products/supplies.

Sure some people don't give a shit how the things they buy are made. Why not use a content producer beating up his models or not paying them if he's cheap.

I agree with moral responsibility, but still the company itself has WAY MORE responsibility than customers of that company. So in this case Pegatron should take 95% of the heat and customers such as apple maybe 5%. While sensationalists make it sound like it is 100% apple.
