    Congrats Australia!

    This is huge news!

A new world record is making the future of solar energy look pretty bright. Researchers in Australia recently developed a solar energy system that can convert more than 40 percent of the sunlight that hits it into electricity — the highest efficiency ever reported for a commercially available photovoltaic system.

    The sun is free!
You need an engine of some type to create energy from any fuel source.
The fuel source is what matters ;O)

When they can find a way to effectively store and transport it (the current problem with relying on solar) that will be news.

But wouldn't this drain the sun?

umm, no. You are joking right? Are you not aware of the inefficiencies in solar panels? You simply hand wave off a huge accomplishment that people 10x smarter than you and me combined just accomplished?

          makes sense, this is gfy.

btw, they can effectively store it, in these things called batteries. not to mention the plethora of other things solar energy provides.

          don't be silly.

lolz, leave it to gfyers to brush off world record setting scientific accomplishments by people contributing to making the Earth a better place to live.

aussies blowing off their own people's accomplishments at that.

same peeps will be in the climate change threads bitching that no one is doing anything.

Well the storage problem is an issue actually. Batteries are not quite good enough to store large amounts of power. One thing they are doing though is superheating "Salts" Then when they cool back down they release their power into the grid. I read about it many months ago, so that is about as technical as I can get on it.

I agree though, shouldn't brush off one achievement just because another is still needed.

BTW...no one is really doing anything about climate change.

dear halfwit, man made climate change is a myth. The climate has been changing since earth's creation. Politicians have convinced our less intelligent that our climate is being changed by man so that they can invent another tax. Only our very least intelligent buy the lie that CO2 is a pollutant.
What this has to do with the continued improvement of renewable energy and storage only you can explain.
Here amongst the intelligent, we understand that entrepreneurs are the drivers of these advances and not scams like solindra and many other fake businesses used to syphon millions of dollars away from legitimate funding ala Al Gore.

only our least intelligent accept the argument that shrinking arctic ice proves manmade climate change one year and then accept the argument that growing arctic ice proves manmade climate change the next.

solar energy is not stored or even attempted to be stored at the commercial/industrial level. Most solar power stations are used to create steam (thermal mass) which is easily stored.

Private (smaller more localized) systems easily use batteries.

Btw, plenty is being done about pollution. I don't confuse pollution with climate change.

I've also stated many times my issues with climate change are 1) it politicizes science and 2) simply gets into the way of people taking action on curbing pollution.

                                so actually, you are dumb.
