He had a bail hearing last week, trying to have his bail reduced, but that was canceled due to issues with his public defender. According to Donny this is all part of "God's plan"....

So I guess he is hoping for some bail reduction (which I still doubt himself or his mother would be able to meet), and then we wait for his trail.

More charges against Pauling expected

Additional alleged victims have been identified in the criminal investigation of anti-pornography activist Donny Pauling Jr., according to statements made in court.

Pauling, 41, appeared in Sutter County Superior Court on Wednesday with a new private attorney, Roberto Marquez.

During the hearing, Deputy District Attorney Anu Chopra said she would be filing new charges.

Pauling is currently charged for crimes against a single victim ? felony unlawful sex, lewd acts with a child under 14, and oral copulation with a child under 14 ? for an alleged ongoing sexual relationship with a teen girl. He was arrested Dec. 1.

He has pleaded not guilty.

On Dec. 16, Sutter sheriff's Capt. Lewis McElfresh was arrested on charges stemming from allegations he watched Pauling have sex with another girl, a minor.

Pauling has not yet been charged for those allegations relating to a second alleged victim.

Chopra said there are additional victims.

Pauling is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, when Marquez will argue to have bail reduced from $500,000.

Judge Susan E. Green scheduled the hearing and said Pauling's bail may be lowered, remain the same, or it may increase depending on what new information is presented.

Pauling remains in custody at the Colusa County Jail. He was moved from the Sutter County Jail after the allegations were made that he had sex with a sheriff's employee's relative, a minor.

From Donny: On December 10th my Public Defender was going to ask the judge to reduce my bail. In response, Deputy D.A. Chopra stated that in the coming week she would be adding a "second victim" to my charges. Her threat worked. My Public Defender decided not to ask for bail reduction until the new charges were added. Those charges were "NOT" added. It was a tactic used by the Deputy D.A. to keep me in jail. Now I have a private attorney. This attorney asked the judge yesterday, to hear his plea for bail reduction tomorrow. The Deputy D.A. argued against this hearing, but lost. So now she is threatening to add two more victims. Again, this is a tactic on her part to try influencing the judge not to reduce my bail. I can't earn money to pay for my defense from behind bars. Please pray that my attorney is successful in arguing for bail reduction. The hearing is tomorrow at 9am.

I view it as an amusing paradox. When one devotes themselves to ANY set of beliefs, they are going to always remain consistent with and behave in a manner consistent with those beliefs. The paradox in this case, is that for one person to have God on his side, directly implies that the others (i.e. victims) do not. If you've devoted your life to an idea (or any belief system which guys your life) such as that which says that God is in control, you can't just simply abandon it as that would shatter in one moment everything you know and your understanding of everything. For example, his mother no doubt remains consistent with her belief that her son is innocent. That is unlikely to change and has nothing to do with religion. The shit she spews from a religious standpoint is merely a convenient coping mechanism to further enable and reinforce her denial.

And to be fair, he seems to have very very little support for those he knows in the church circles.

Yeah, its all basic tribal behavior. Nothing more than that really. There is how we perceive and understand the world (largely conservative or liberal perspective) and from there, everyone divides into two basic tribes and acts accordingly. I've mentioned this before a few times, but if you read "The Righteous Mind" by Jonathan Haidt, you'd be sitting there the whole going "oh... that makes total fucking sense now" as it pertains to both how you are I think and acts or how a crocket thinks and acts. He explains well the paradox you touch on... the "open, accepting, loving - fuck you motherfucker if you disagree with me, you're crazy and i hope you die a painful death" type attitudes and behaviors and its all well explained and backed by decades of how own research as a Liberal university professor who begrudgingly had to accept his own findings and conclusions,.

My experience is that many church goers talk a good game, but don't really stand by you unless it makes them look good.

Case in point. A friend of my brother's oldest daughter got married a few months after graduating high school. She was 18 and grew up in the church. The church celebrated their marriage (he was 22 at the time and none in the church had any issue with a 20 year old guy dating a 16-year old girl when they first started going out two years earlier). Anyway, many people from the church came to the wedding, gave gifts and even turned up to help them move into their new place after the wedding. She was a virgin and literally moved from her bedroom in her parent's house into her marriage home. It was an amazing love story that the church celebrated.

Then several months later it turns out living together is hard. He drinks a lot (but had kept it hidden from her before) and they eventually separate and get divorced within a year and a half of getting married. He was the one that left her and refused to try to fix their problems. When it came time for her to move out nobody from the church showed up to help. At the church many people stopped talking to her and kind of shunned her because she "hadn't been a good wife."

They loved the idea of her getting married, but had no common sense that it could turn out bad then when it did turn out bad they turned on her.

These people are praying for Donnie and that is all they will do. They already had the chance to donate money and didn't. If Donnie is convicted you know many of them will suddenly be like, "I knew all along something was wrong."

I think strident atheists have their own issues, there are too many unsolved mysteries beyond our understanding and knowledge to claim we know the truth, saying there is nothing is no more fact than saying there is something. Atheists work on faith too.

I don't have an opinion on religion really. I believe its an important step in the evolution of man and necessary. Monotheistic religions (as i've said in the past) are at their core, simply a collection of laws (namely, moral laws), rules on food safety and cleanliness. These are important as man became sedentary and we went from small groups of 40-50-100 to large cities. These rules and laws are many times more effective when coupled with the shared belief that not only is someone that you can never hide from watching you, but that in case you thought you were getting away with something, you'll still have to answer for it in the end. Of course there are many added benefits as well... for example, its a way of telling the people and Pharaoh, he's not only not a God, but he'll answer to someone bigger and subverting his power. Monotheistic religions tend to provide a lot of simple and comforting answers to troubling and often unanswerable questions.

At the end of the day, there is no possible way to prove there is no God. As the great James Randi said, you can't prove a negative. Therefore, from a simple perspective of logic and reason, the existence of God, cannot be fully dismissed. If you chose to, that is also a matter of faith, not fact.

To me, if it makes you a better person, makes you want to be a better person and makes you happy and doesn't affect me.... then why not.
