Networking gurus

this was on my online networking class test i took and i got it wrong and i wanted to know what the right answer was... anyone know?

For Internet communications, which of the following protocols MUST be used?

HTTP
SNMP
TCP
SMTP

i said snmp and got it wrong.... im thinking it cant be http or snmp because you dont HAVE to have email or web browsing, and you can use udp instead of tcp. so whats the answer?

HTTP, SNMP and SMTP all run on top of TCP.

The droid you are looking for is TCP

Correct.

TCP/IP is the first component in any network stack.

Did they hit you with the old stand by question about how many layers are in the OSI model? It amazes me how many techs get this one wrong.

yeah tcp is the language of the internet, but the option is TCP... which could be replaced by UDP so thats why i wasnt sure. if anyone who has taken networking classes doesnt know that theres 7 layers in the osi reference model its amazing they didnt flunk. they have gone over that in depth in almost every networking class i have taken so far.

No, no they don't count the actual burrito tortilla as a layer.

So it's 7 layers PLUS tortilla.

application
presentation
session
transport
network
datalink
physical

apstndp
anal penetration's standard, tried nasty double penetration?

application -> kazaa
presentation -> viewable porn file
session -> connection to another peer to download porn
transport -> tcp; transmission control protocol makes sure you don't lose any packets (unlike, say, real player or other realtime apps), so that your file works when you have it all
network -> constructed as ip4 packets, but may go places as ip6
datalink -> switches, receivers, dumber than a router
physical -> ethernet, hubz, air
