I was a kid when it aired and still remember all the women going crazy watching it on t.v.
This was his move to reclaim his place as "The King Of Rock-N-Roll" and it's probably his greatest performance ever.
I had forgotten how damn good he really was. I watched that show in it's entirety again a couple of years ago and yes...he really was that damn good.
Unfortunately, this was not only Elvis at the height of his powers...but he never again had his shit together like he did on this one night.
The next few years started his descent into prescription drug hell and eventual death as a fat bloated caricature of himself only 9 short years later.

Agreed about the one night... but he wasnt as fucked up as we've been led to believe. He was going to start a new tour when he died, and he usually cut all the shit out, exercised and binged on "nothing" when he was about to set out.
He actually died of what a surprisingly high number of men die of at his age... heart stoppage in the push on the can....
:D

Well, I was only 16 when he died...so I can't comment on how fucked up he may have been. But back in the 1980's I read a book written by one of his "Memphis Mafia" guys.
And according to their inside view, he was totally dependent on prescription drugs in massive quantities (including of course dilaudid).
Or maybe it was a conspiracy? lol No, let's don't go down that road!
Let's just say this was the pinnacle of him physically and musically.
All one has to do is take a look at THIS Elvis in the video and then video of him from right here in Vegas doing sold out shows at The Hilton every night.
As for "He was going to start a new tour when he died, and he usually cut all the shit out, exercised and binged on "nothing" when he was about to set out"...
Well, the fact is...he did 55 shows on tour that very year (1977)
In other words he had just come off touring. And if you are correct...he should have been lean and mean. But instead he was pretty drugged up and fat.
It's sad. And I wish you were right. Here is footage of him on tour in June 1977 (looking fat and bloated)...he died August 16, 1977 if that gives you some idea:

I wish I was right too. I read some stuff about his "new" health habits and havent really looked into it... but I definitely know his date of death. As a kid who worshipped him, it wrecked my birthday which was the day after...
Terence Hill and Bud Spencer YO!

I remember the date well too, mostly because I just happened to be at the gates of his house the day he died. I was only a baby and we just happened to stop by there while travelling to visit my aunt who was working in the area for a brief stint. Always loved his stuff.
