This really is sad, and hard to believe.

1 out of 30 children in America is homeless.

"The number of homeless children in the U.S. has surged in recent years to an all-time high, amounting to one child in every 30, according to a comprehensive state-by-state report that blames the nation?s high poverty rate, the lack of affordable housing and the impacts of pervasive domestic violence"

"The problem is particularly severe in California, which has one-eighth of the U.S. population but accounts for more than one-fifth of the homeless children with a tally of nearly 527,000."

"Child homelessness increased by 8 percent nationally from 2012 to 2013"

Absolutely Horrible. I try to give to the local charities directly as much as possible. Some really do a good job handing things out to those in need.

Come on. Do you believe that number? 500k homeless per state on average? Do you see that menu kids wandering around with or without their parents?

Those crafty little bastards must be pretending to be homeless to collect free benefits.

They mean 20% of kids can't afford their own home. This is what happens when you let your government pass child labor laws.

                          Just read the report.

It actually says that "1 in 30 children were homeless at some point last year".

I take that to mean that they weren't perpetually homeless living in the gutter by themselves.

As I would understand that...it would mean that their parents may have lost their home or apartment at some point.

I'm thinking that would mean that a large percentage of them may be counted as "homeless" when the reality is that their parents might have been scrambling to get a new place for a few days?

Not saying that "homeless" children aren't a problem. I just think that the definition of "homeless" being used in that report is most definitely not the picture the OP used of a child all alone on the streets.

Matter of fact...I'm pretty sure if I lived in one of those cheap "extended stay" motels that people actually LIVE in...I would be counted as "homeless".

I'm not even sure if they count people who lose their jobs and apartments/homes and move back in with their parents temporarily as "homeless"?

Anyway, the "homeless at SOME POINT" was what caught my eye when I read that.

When I hear "homeless children" I see something in my head similar to the pic that the OP posted. I'm sure there are some of those too...but I don't think that the "1 in 30" are homeless like that.

You should look the other way when passing them on the street.

Good points. I seems like a lot to me and while I see quite a few "homeless" looking people around I have yet to see kids with them. I have a soft spot for kids and animals and I just haven't seen this myself. Of course kids with single mothers might be living with parents, relatives, friends and still get counted by aid workers as homeless.

I find it hard to believe politicians wouldn't jump on an 8% jump on homeless kids from 2014-2015 and the 1 in 30 figure. (the photo was from the article and it's a stock image)

                                  Food

A local charity has a twice monthly mobile food bank. Semi trucks pull into a church parking lot on a Saturday, to distribute perishable foods. The crowd is so large they had to move to an abandoned car dealer lot. It's a 4 hour wait before they start.
People aren't waiting 4 hours in 20-30 degree weather because they're lazy.
Probably the biggest reason for so many in California, is people figure it's easier to survive in a moderate climate, as to being homeless in a subzero Detroit.

it's probably like Robbie suggested... parents lost the house, moved in with some relative for a few weeks till they could get a place of their own... and that's what they call "homeless"... cause technically that's what it is, they are not staying at their own "home", it's someone else's "home"...

That brings up another observation. I'm in Kentucky right now and it's cold as shit, 17 degrees. Yesterday was a record low for this time of year and the night before local news stories were full of pet warnings and homeless shelter interviews. Most of the shelters were church based and showed mostly males and asked for clothing donations.

Didn't show any women or kids which would have really upped any contributions. Are there lots of separate shelters just for women/kids? I have no idea ....

                                        .

Although there are a few rare family shelters, women's/children shelters are like domestic violence shelters. They are a hidden secret, so the women aren't preyed upon. Usually if women show up at the local church shelters the aid workers get them to the safety of the women's shelters. Also they don't want to put the women's faces on TV for safety.
The Salvation Army runs a lot of shelters, a good place if you want to send a warm coat, blanket or money. A local TV station has an annual coat drive. To encourage donations they do have a few door prizes.
Here in Kansas City, a large network of shelters and food kitchens are the City Union Mission. The founder, Annie Chambers, owned the most opulent brothel between Chicago and Denver in the late 1800's. Left all her money to start the mission. Many of her 'ladies' ended up marrying well.
Instead of the beach, my son spent a spring break in D.C. They would take a van out to a stop near where the homeless lived and give out sandwiches and what ever else was available. Always ran out of food before people.

                                                  I question this too.

I live in a small town - 40k - and we have a homeless population. We even know who some of them are, mostly meth addicts. I don't remember seeing any homeless kids.

I also just drove past the homeless section of Sacramento this weekend. There is one area where they all seem to hang out. I saw them, but I didn't see any kids.

                                                    Children

Women with children avoid know homeless areas. Those places have a lot of violent men. Hell, if I were homeless I'd avoid them.

Counting the homeless isn't easy. But we do know that 19.9 million children are registered in the food stamp program. That possibly works out to 1 in 4 children are on food stamps.

New data show 1 in 4 children on food stamps in FY 2011 | The Daily Caller

Crazy part, your food stamp allowance is based partially on your monthly rent/house payment. So if you pay $500 a month for an apartment and become homeless your allowance drops drastically. If somehow the landlord doesn't throw you out, but you're not paying the $500 you can still claim you're paying $500 in housing.

                                                      Homeless Kids

Most of the stories I hear, the mom & kids are homeless and living in the car. When possible the kids try and make it to school.

The other day Turner Movies had 1933- Wild Boys of the Road. Mostly older homeless youths looking for for and work. Not quite the truth, but was probably based on happenings at that time.

Several years ago I dated a woman that worked for an organization that ran shelters for women who were mostly victims of abuse. They also worked with many other agencies and organizations. There are a lot more options for women especially if they have children then single men. In some cases if it a family with a husband, wife and kid(s) they will have the guy in one shelter and the women and children in another. Also, in many agencies women with kids get priority.

The best thing to do is call around try to get in contact with shelters and groups that specialize in helping homeless kids. You can ask them what they need most. If you have cash and were going to buy coats and blankets they might have bigger needs for other things, or they might use it to buy for specific people. If you have extra blankets and coats they can tell you the best place to donate them so they can be put to use ASAP.

I think it was 2008 or 2009 I read a local news article here in the Netherlands how one of the charities was getting ready to go over and start a program in some of the poorer states to feed hungry and homeless children.

All I could think is WTF?! This should be going to a 3rd world country who really can't feed its children, not to the states that could feed its children if it really wanted to. Sad.

You're MEANT to think that every person who is poor is a mother who has 9 babies and stays on welfare so that she can abuse it, all while looting and marauding around her own city and ruining life for everyone else. Good luck.
