Manson has always maintained that he was a musician with groupie friends that acted on their own. The stories about the murders are similar to what would later go on in the hip hop music industry culture. We just don't see modern artists being arrested for the actions of their crew.
If you shift Manson's life forward 30 years and make him a "fringe conspiracy" webmaster instead of a central figure of a musical social circle during the 1960's, he doesn't go to prison. He was essencially an Alex Jones type character long before there was an internet. 1971 didn't know how to process that, so they labeled him as being nuts and a cult leader.
Was he really? We may never know for sure.

His swastika started out as an "X" that was symbolic of him being eliminated from society. He later changed it. The reasoning does not appear to have anything to do with him being inspired by Nazi Germany principals (which if you watch his numerous interviews you will never hear any such thing), but instead branding himself what he deemed society has made him out to be, the anti-hero, using a taboo symbol of evil.

He is in prison for being an accessory to murder. The killers were influenced by Tex Watson, not Manson. It's generally accepted that Manson knew of the plans, but he allegedly told those involved that it was their business and he distanced himself from it instead of trying to stop it.
My feeling is that Manson was/is a creative genius type surrounded by the wrong people. Watson was a violent loose cannon who by coincidence was attracted to Manson's artistic philosophy and in turn influenced some low IQ female groupies of Manson's to help him out.
Manson for his part has served his time by now and should be paroled. That won't happen though. Pop culture has built him up over 40 years to be the face of evil.Comment
