On Mainstream SEO agencies:

All mainstream SEO companies use automation. I've had at least ten of them try to pitch me for one thing or another. I don't tell them that I know SEO till the end. It's awesome to blow their mind with all the jargon and SEO space acronyms. Every one of them cops to using GSA/SER, etc. etc./ Blackhatting tactics when it's all said and done.

I've learned that the "ignorance of the client" is essential in them keeping the story going long term. They'll automate some tiers and set up some WP PBNs and show some ranking movements, maybe put the clients on the first page for some terms that aren't competitive.

The second thing that is important is to not take clients in super competitive verticals, and if you do, you better not promise them the moon; and have performance clauses in your contracts. Automation is only going to carry a term so far. Google will catch on eventually and the sites are cooked. Automation should only be done on domains you don't want to keep long term.

The bottom line is that building organic links that are NOT spam, and NOT designed to trick the algorithms is a challenge these days. It's time consuming, it's expensive, and it takes a hell of a lot more links to overcome the rest of the spam that is out there currently ranking. 301ing expired domains with IBLs from authority sites still works, but is another challenge in itself.

Trying to SEO white hat is a uphill battle that few will still even attempt. There are only so many hours in the day.

The thing that really puts the 'link spammers" cap on them is when they only want to charge you 800 bucks a month. There are at least 300 of these agencies that I could point out in the LA area alone.

It's gotten VERY challenging as of late. Spam still works though.

My stuff is still ranking in mainstream, and it's ALL automation. It's pure luck. Can't believe that Google hasn't caught it. They will though. When they do, I will start over.

Good luck Jay. Always do shit that you are passionate about. Everything else will just suck your soul dry.

SER is like a musical instrument. You can make it sound like a cat dying, or you can make it put out something beautiful.

That's a pretty good idea of what I thought SEO agencies were about and what I thought SEO was these days - an uphill battle. I remember thinking to myself that it is almost impossible to get as many 'natural,' non spammy links as one needs to rank first without spending 25 hours per day in work and $5k in link buying.

You seem to know more than I do and I thought it was a well written post.

CourtneyR 11-13-2014 06:43 PM

Thanks. I know a little bit. I'm no expert for sure.

The big tell for most of the SEO companies out there is when you hear them say "SEO Expert".

There is no such thing. Expert is defined as "a person who has a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of or skill in a particular area". It's not possible for someone to be an expert. Experts don't guess at things. Experts have definitive knowledge.

It's not possible to have "authoritative" knowledge about Google. No SEOs work there, and no Google employees even know enough to share how anything works. That is the Google way. They clearly share nothing about how the engine works. All SEO knowledge is gained by trial and error, and whatever you believe from Google's red herring spokesmen and SEO industry talking heads.

"SEO Professional" are the guys you want to work with. "A person engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime."

I never really understood someone calling themselves an SEO expert.

Imagine if you were playing a game against someone. The person you're competing against doesn't tell you the rules of the game. You have to guess. The person you're competing against changes the rules anytime they want in their favor. You have to guess at the new rules. The person you're competing against applies the rules differently to different players on the field. The person kicks you out of the game for breaking the rules that you don't even know. That person is Google. That is SEO.

:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Anyway, Jay is an SEO professional, he knows his shit, and I don't need to jack a thread to bitch about smoke and mirrors from SEO companies.

Back to the topics at hand.

Step #1

Google "SEO"

Step #2

Hire someone on the front page

Yes. And check how long they've maintained those front page ranks. My guess would be it's a revolving door with all those companies blasting links to stay on the front page.

Well depend how good it is.If you are really really good, meaning you make shitload of money with it,then no.If you are some sort of "medium class" like you make enough for living but nothing spectacular, then taking clients might have sense to get bonus income. After all when it comes to seo companies most of their clients are people who have zero clue about seo.

Good luck! I've had a non-adult SEO business for 5 years and the industry is tough. A ton of cheap shit agencies who do bad work and get their clients banned from Google is not unusual. Keep on the straight and narrow and you'll do great!

stoka 11-19-2014 08:07 AM

i'd eventually change design of the site. It reminds me of those pay for nothing seo sites, with their "call to action" tactics and bullshit. But I guess you'll stick with it for a while - in that case I'd change the text part of the logo and would fix social icons graphics. And the logo should be exported to png

stoka 11-19-2014 08:11 AM

also at <500px the slider should be replaced with clear fixed graphics and the logo should scale down below 500 as well

BettingHandle 11-19-2014 08:23 AM

Good luck!

Your focus is in "playing the game". No outsider knows Google's all secrets, but you don't need to know those. Google has well informed what it wants from website owners and what it values. In simple: Google wants to bring relevant search results those satisfy the needs of the searchers (users).

Playing the cat and mouse game is risky and brings fluctuative results, giving what Google wants, doesn't.

I have called myself as a SEO professional.

Correction: Google wants to make as much money as they can.

Yes, of course, but doing that what I said before. It might change if people just start giving money to Google for nothing, but when waiting for that..

I've been doing "SEO" for the better part of 20 years right now. One thing that I've always found is knowing how to do it responsibly is by staying one step ahead of the game. What is worse is that these days I am seeing all of these people trying to "sell the dream" and their teaching techniques that thousands of people are going to copy and all of those people plus all of their clients will get demolished next time Google decides to update.

yes, that site was thrown together pretty fast... I don't plan on keeping it... I actually use the template my friend gave me and just swapped out my own text... I agree the header needs to be way smaller... I'm not trying to rank it for anything right now so it doesn't matter a lot to me
