Maybe its just the homeless in my city but honestly when talking to them on occasions I find them to be bright cheerful sometimes even highly intelligent people, albeit many with mental illness. If you've never actually talked to a homeless person you may not know this, but many are homeless by choice. One Wino that hangs out in front of a bar I go to on the Venice circle is an ex programmer who had a family, house, etc. One day he just said "fuck it" and dropped out. He panhandles and holds up funny signs like "Fuck You Pay Me" and lives a basic life of leisure on the beach. The point is that many are homeless by choice because they don't want any responsibilities or commitments. Many are carefree. That doesnt take away from the fact that many are terribly disturbed and have addiction issues.

When I used to see homeless people I would think "Dirty Bum, get a job", but after crossing paths with many I think that people should have a bit more compassion for their fellow man, even if they are living the life of Riley.

Walking or hitchhiking??? You might smell if you have no shower...

Wherever there's a Pizza Hut dumpster, I'll be there. I would only start eating Pizza Hut after I become homeless.

Actually I change my mind. I would live in hotel lobbys and pools.. as long as you look clean you can stay in a hotel 24/7 and use their wireless, pools, facilities.

If you're homeless and broke you won't be looking clean for long - you need access to a shower, a razor to shave, you need clothes and shoes, those need to be cleaned.

Being homeless is misery to a normal person, the mentally ill who make up a big part of the homeless population probably have it easier than the person who for whatever reason finds himself down on his luck and homeless. There's also age to consider, to be homeless in your 20's is a lot different than being homeless in your 40's and later.

I would crawl into a shallow roadside ditch and let the worms and the slugs turn my worthless skinsack into detritus.

No tourists are scared away in Venice and their are tent cities everynight as I drive my bike by. The homeless in Venice are homelesss but they are what you would call the Beverly Homebilliesless something.

If you are going to be homeless, you might as well do it where the weather is always perfect.

Back in '03 I lived in Ala Moana, had an apt couple blocks away from this park and would walk by every day on the way to the beach. I concur, if I had to be homeless this spot would be near the top of my list.

you've spoken to every tourist? You've crunched the #s on tourism before and after homeless crackdowns? Sorry but it's a fact that these beach cities are run on tourism and tourist dollars are directly negatively impacted by homeless.

Where in venice are tent cities? granted, venice is slightly more tolerant of homeless but tents are illegal structures under the law and homeless do get arrested there for that.

Take a walk down the boardwalk at midnite.

Yes living in cars is banned, but people still live in busses and other vehicles - they just move around quite a bit. Santa Monica is extremely tolerant of homeless. South bay not so much.

And fuck the tourists, they can eat dick.

dyna mo 10-26-2014 08:10 AM

tourists bring dollars.

homeless bring crime.

Homeless must live somewhere. They have no homes. should we put them on trains and give them acid showers?? Ship them all to downtown LA. They have just as much right to be on the beach as you.

I didn't offer my opinion on the matter, I stated a fact. I wasn't speaking to who has the right to do what.

the fact is where homeless are, crime is. that is a simple fact. it's not about rights. I couldn't give 2 shits who enjoys the beach but again, the fact is, homeless bring crime with them and tourists bring dollars.

you can snub your nose at that all you want but that's how the world goes around.

We often give to the occasional guy we see sitting outside a supermarket, usually with disability, removed fingers from hand & that sort of thing. Happens a lot here in Spain :Oh crap

I wasn't aware the debate was re: helping or not. Of course people can help others when they can. But letting homeless skirt the rules isn't helping anyone. the laws apply to everyone.

In Bangkok at every BTS (Skytrain) station there are horribly disfigured and limbless people. Basically its their job to beg for money. I tend to give at least a little something every time I pass by. I have so much in comparison.

The thing that gets me is these guys have smiles on their faces, even with insurmountable odds against them they wake up everyday and go to "work".

No rules for the debate, just raising awareness. :thumbsup

No, in general people don't think about the homeless much. They pass them by as if they don't exist. Though the homeless in Venice have it pretty good in other parts of the country or world they dont. Maybe this thread might make somebody aware and lend a hand... maybe not. It's just a silly message board, not the UN.

You seem to want to argue, and I am not here to argue.

Night!

I think Chris is merely pointing out the fact, we live in one world. We can become homeless at a drop of your business & many of the miss unfortunate of people are happy or at least try to just get on with it, without being as negative as those with fortunes or no disabilities :thumbsup
