Twitpic.com is going down in flames...

Twitpic will be shutting down October 25th.

Grab what you can.

This is why I hate 3rd party aps and programs.

The question is how many other sites like "bit.ly" will crash to some day and take all our links with it?

I am getting a new tiny adult domain name in order to protect myself. Glad I did this in mainstream already...

I might be confused but I thought twitter sued them or such and they had to either hand over the domain or something or shut down. Twitpic chose not to work with Twitter and instead to self destruct.

That's correct...

Twitpic founder Noah Everett - "Twitter contacted our legal demanding that we abandon our trademark application or risk losing access to their API." The move shocked Everett "since Twitpic has been around since early 2008, and our trademark application has been in the USPTO since 2009." Twitpic doesn?t have the resources to battle Twitter legally and Everett has decided to shut down Twitpic instead."

TwitPic, the first app that allowed people to share images via Twitter, announced today that it would shut down after September 25th due to Twitter attempting to sue their pants off.

In a blog post, CEO Noah Everett said that the small company could not afford to fight a lawsuit filed by Twitter, demanding that the company withdraw its application to trademark its own name ? an application that?s been in the process since 2009.

?During the ?published for opposition? phase of the trademark is when Twitter reached out to our counsel and implied we could be denied access to their API if we did not give up our mark,? Everett revealed. ?Unfortunately we do not have the resources to fend off a large company like Twitter to maintain our mark which we believe whole heartedly is rightfully ours.?

TwitPic, which actually preceded Twitter itself in allowing users to share pictures on the microblogging network, will soon roll out a feature allowing its users to export and back up their photos.

Well that's what I was getting at. Get a domain that does not make them hungry for your trademark and migrate the users. Must be a million names better than twitpic for pete's sake.
