If your home 'desktop computer' free ??

I've been meaning to upgrade my desktop computer for a while now, but i'm not sure if i actually need to any more. 2 laptops, a tablet and 2 smart phones means i can do pretty much everything i need without the desktop taking up space.

I've started turning the room which we had the desktop into a sort of mini gym, so the extra space would be nice.

Throw it out or keep and upgrade ??

i prefer working on the desktop but that's just me. if you can be just as productive without it, there is no real need i suppose.

You answered your own question.

I couldn't be without my desktops, I love the real estate space. I go crazy when working on my laptop only, but the majority of people seem to prefer it now.

I'm with the desktop crowd, I cannot work on a laptop - I just feel too constricted.

You don't have a house with a dedicated office?

I have two full sized PCs with multiple monitors, a 18 inch laptop on a full time work station in another room with an extra monitor, another laptop for downstairs, and a M$ Surface that floats around the house working as both a tablet and a laptop.

I cannot work full time on a laptop. Way too small. I need three monitors to work.

Back when I was just doing photos and small 2min videos I was able to run completely off a laptop for over a year. These days I appreciate my full sized keyboard with numpad, dual monitors, and Core i7 for the video processing and Lightroom work I need to do. I *could* process a few videos on a laptop... but it would be so painful and take so much longer!

I run everything from my flip phone. Fuck the mobile internet. I don't need no stinking bitpay app because I know how to website.

Also, I use a desktop 95% of the time and the rest of the time I use a laptop. No smartphone needed. I assume people call them smartphones because the phone is actually way smarter than most users.

I've been using laptops only since 2008 or so.. BUT I hook them into my 22" monitor with full-sized keyboard and wireless mouse. I keep all my files backed up on external drives.

With today's laptop as fast as they are you can do anything on them. Going to upgrade my laptop to a i7 with lots of ram and a nice HD LED in a few weeks.

are docking stations really needed? I've seen such mixed feedback on reviews of most docks. Next laptop is hdmi with 4 USB ports, so the monitor will be hdmi and take a second to plug in as well as a usb keyboard and wireless mouse. Printers are all wireless these days.

how do you work on a laptop? on your lap? on a desk? maybe i'm just so used to having my pullout keyboard thing that i can't imagine having my hands any higher to do work on a desk and working on my lap sucks. i can see plugging into a monitor and keyboard but then you're basically using a desktop without the tower.

HDMI is limited to 1920*1080 - have two 2560*1440 27's here.

Plus, I love being able to plonk the laptop down and not need to plug a thing in, ie mouse/keyboard/ monitors/external hd's etc

It is a convenience thing for me.

Not at all. You are still using a PC.

When I think of PC set up, I am thinking of a desk with a full keyboard, a mouse, and multiple monitors. Right now I am on an Alienware MX18 with an extra monitor on a desk - that's no longer a laptop, but more traditional PC set up.

A laptop is when you can go from room to room only carrying your laptop - meaning no extra monitors, keyboard, or mouse.

A laptop with a docking station and an extra monitor is a really more like a PC.

The monitors yes, the keyboard - depends what you are used to, I am super slow nowadays on a full keyboard I'm too used to my laptops keyboard.

I still classify this as laptop as I can have multi-screen setup at home but then I can take my latop jump on a plane and go to the other home in the other country... and work during the entire journey, hard to do with actual desktop.

I kind of have a desk setup for my phone, when I am at home it has a full blown monitor, a mouse, a keyboard and external drive; I use it like that as a second computer but it's still a phone, you just disconnect it and it goes in your pocket, hard to do any serious work with it though when it's not connected like that

I use an HP Elitebook (which has every port under the sun on-board), put a Samsung Pro SSD in it and bought a HP docking station for $25 off eBay.

Having a laptop with a dock really makes all the difference. I used to have two computers but had file sync issues. I wanted to get my work down to one computer but I also wanted to grab and go.

HP Elitebook's offer great performance, the fan is not loud and is not running all the time like my spouse's i7 Vaio is. I recently switched out the optical drive for a 640 GB 2.5" hard disk I had laying around and it works great.

Best of all, everything is encrypted, my secondary drive is automatically mounted when I authenticate to the full disk encryption. I even have LoJack in the BIOS in case somebody steals it and attempts to swap the hard disk.

I have a full desktop like setup, but with laptop mobility. Dual screens, external mouse and keyboard, USB devices all automagically connected when I place this thing in the dock. Another nice thing is I never have to unplug the power cable. I actually have the original power cable in my car in case I am somewhere and need to use my laptop for an extended period of time.

Battery life is great, if you have the "on battery" power settings tweaked properly. It all comes down to use. I primarily do Linux Systems Administration so I need mobility and security verses production power.

All in all I am very happy with my HP Elitebook. We are considering a Apple Macbook Pro laptop for my spouse and I would not hesitate to invest in a Henge Dock for Macbook.

Laptops with widescreen external monitors and full-size wireless kb mouse. Tablet for 'remote' access. External hdd's galore.

Only use mini atx for htpc (mounted LCD) and cctv and that's well outta the way

No, a laptop with a docking station and extra monitor is still a laptop. I would call that a work station.

I take my laptop home / everywhere I travel. Never did that with my desktop

YES! This.. In today's high tech world I just don't see the need to have a computer, laptop, tablet, and smartphone. Nope I like and use all but the first one. While IMO a tablet could never be a desktop/laptop replacement for real webmasters, I don't think PCs are needed anymore with the high powered laptops out there.

You say a laptop with a external monitor, keyboard, and mouse is just a desktop? Hell no! When was the last time you could take your "desktop" out by the pool or on vacation as a carry on? A fast laptop can do 90% of what a PC can do unless you are a gamer and even then they make $4k laptops that can do that too.

Since the smartphones and tablets came along I use my laptop 80% less as a mobile device but I'd still never leave home without a laptop if I was going away for the weekend or a real vacation.

it would be nice to only have one unit to worry about though i think i'd always need a desk/computer chair to use. i couldn't imagine working every day off the couch or kitchen table.

Then call it a docking station, fine - it's very similar to a PC. It's a PC you "could" take with you if you.... disconnected it from the monitors and the keyboard.

If he did don't you think he would have mentioned it, kind of important detail, especially when he described where does he keep it.

When people post this it just proves that they need desktop. This setup = desktop with the ability to take it as a laptop outside of the home/office.

Mostly I use my Macbook Air with external mouse, keyboard and dual monitors. I connect one with displayport, and the other through a USB to DVI adaptor which works very well.
