Words People Mispronounce

I was listening to a report on the radio while working, and the reporter pronounced "realtor" "real-uh-tor" and it reminded me of the other radio show emanation from Seattle which has the tag line, "There is no "r" in Washington." I have a friend who pronounces "Washington" as "Warshington." My father is an intelligent man, but he insists on putting a second "r" in "sherbet" so it comes out "sherbert." More: "ath-uh-lete" for "athlete," "Feb-yoo-ary" for "February," "comfterble" for "comfortable," and "probly" or "probally" for "probably."

Can you think of any that drive you nuts when you hear them?

Yep, you nailed a few good ones. That "prolly" --- "probally" --- "probly" --- "PROBABLY" thing always bugs me, it's one of the most fucked-with words on the internet.

My mom always says "Li-berry" instead of "Li-brar-y", and another one she messes up every time is "Chimm-ley" as opposed to "Chim-ney", drives me up the wall.

Hahaha OWNED! He got you with that one.

Sherbert is actually a correct pronunciation. So all this time you have been bitching and complaining to your poor old dad the he is saying sherbert wrong, actually YOU are wrong and owe him an apology. I've got $5 says you never admit to him he was right all this time though.

If you do, post the pic of your face after he knocks all your teeth out for being such an annoying prick about the sherbert pronunciation over the years!

My mother in law says "WaRshington", "waRsh", etc.

The ones that make me laugh the most aren't so much the mispronunciations but the total wrong usage of a word inside a phrase, like "I must of done that wrong" or "I should of gone home." The word is HAVE, not OF. "Must of" doesn't make any sense.

I also saw someone in a forum once say that they were going to "take that one with a grain assault" lol.

Realtor is not even really a word. It is a trademark of an association.

As for words that are mispronounced, what about the word ASK. It is not AXE.

The word we used when I was a kid and I still use is Fudgicle instead of Fudgesicle.

Kind of reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where George goes out with that girl he sends to the mental hospital for saying Samuel.

I hate it when people pronouce Mature. Ma Tour. If its right or wrong, it still sounds stupid.

Im from Newfoundland and people pronounce that wrong all the time. Let the flames beging.

Had an Australian science teacher who pronounced 'aluminum' - 'Al-You-Min-Eee-Umm' she was a pretty lousy science teacher just the same

people from 'Vancouver' pronounce it 'Vang-Cooh-Vuh'

it's gonna only get worse, this city is so ethnically diverse that all kinds of new words and pronunciations are created every day

add to that a prime minister who can't speak a word of english or french without mangling it

Ya got me there, except that (in my humble opinion) the dictionary makers shouldn't have given up on that one. A while ago, the lexicographers stopped being corrective and prescriptive and started bending with tide of common usage. No longer do they really provide a service other than describing what people are doing rather than trying to maintain some standards, like correcting people who put an extra "r" in "sherbert" or one that isn't there at all in "Washington."

Dan Rather set my spine itching this evening introducing the President's speech...

"The war on Terra"
It's terror, dumbass. We're not going out there to beat the shit out of the sand.

zink = sink
bisketti = spaghetti
winder = window
warsh = wash
element AIR Y = elementary (spelled that way for pronunciation's sake)

But what gets me worse than pronunciation is looking at all of these adult sites and seeing the horrible fucking spelling. It looks like the majority of this industry didn't pass the 5th grade.

So just to get it off of my chest, here's a little lesson...
Its = A possessive, such as "the cat licked its balls"
It's = It is or it has, such as "It's going to rain" or "It's been nice meeting you"
Your = a possessive, such as "Is that your nut sack?"
You're = You are. "You're really going to eat that?"
Their = A possessive of multiple persons "It's their food."
They're = They are. "They're going to eat that food."
Whine = a pathetic sound... it's not wing, people. "She whined all night long." Not "She winged all night long." A wing is something you find on a fucking bird or a really cool old car.

Sure, some things like "Cum inside and meet me" are done on purpose for a certain effect. But please people - with the words above, show some respect for yourself. At least buy a dictionary.

zink = sink
bisketti = spaghetti
winder = window
warsh = wash
element AIR Y = elementary (spelled that way for pronunciation's sake)

You got issues.

Well you people never seem to have a problem with one syllable words!

However, once you get to two syllables, it gets tricky!

Actually for the longest time it drove me nuts to see people saying "whinge" or "whinging" when the word is WHINE or WHINING, but then I decided to look it up and found that in the UK and elsewhere it is indeed spelled and pronounced that way.

whinge: Pronunciation Key (hwnj, wnj)
intr.v. Chiefly British whinged, whing·ing, whing·es
To complain or protest, especially in an annoying or persistent manner.
