I don't think so. The soldiers got paid, it was their profession. Also, saying "no" wasn't really option if your king ordered to do something. Defending side on the other hand, fought for their lives, homes, families, property and freedom. And that side also had hired soldiers.

You understimate people if you think that just hatred of the foreigner gets people to fight wars. At least you need some threat scenario, just simply hating foreigner simply isn't enough. For example if the troops turnover is something like 100 % (not uncommon), you very soon come to conclusion that "I don't hate enemy so much after all, let's go home.", if the hating enemy is the sole reason to fight.

I think it took matter of minutes or hours to blame it on the Rebels or Russia by some media posts.

MrDiez your army is good to fight against rebels only(yes clearly supported by Russia). But I think you need to be more realistic when you think Ukrain can beat regular Russian army.
