Tired Eyes Problem - What to do?
Greetings,
What do you do protect your eyes from the PC? My eyes are severely tired, and Iīve tried everything (except being away from the computer... itīs a bit difficult to do that for more than some days). Iīve tried all kind of lights, pointing to the ceilling, not directly to our eyes, behind me, you name it, but nothing worked. Now itīs affecting my everyday, even off the house. Bright lights ruins my eyes and give me headaches. Even on winter I have to use sunglasses on the street. Iīve read that "Vitamine A" is very good to your eyes, not only "Vitamine C". Because my eyes are severely dry, they donīt regenerate so quickly. What do you do to prevent your eyes from being tired? I think my problem was caused not only from many years of PC using, but because I used contact lenses even when I was at the computer (and we blink a lot less, leaving the eye very dry) and too much hours at my laptop (itīs a TFT but has lot less hertz than a good monitor... Iīm buying a new one, capable of 132 Hz). Doctors only prescribes me eye drops, but thatīs not working. This problem will affect, sooner or later, all of us full time 12+ hours a day webmasters... whatīs your secret to prevent this? I advise to take a break each hour, and drink a lot of water. And you?

Sometimes I think the only option is really leaving the computers (our vision is a very precious thing), but this is my work, canīt do that... even if I left my webmastering works, my area is computing...

I went to 3 doctors, and the only thing they do is alter my glasses lenses or to give me eye drops... no results. Iīm finishing some late works, and taking a break from computers.
But this is a so common problem, that maybe someone in the entire world has discovered something to minimize this damn problem... Thatīs the reason of this thread... to help us all... not only the ones who already have this problem, but the others that will get it in the future....

The best tip I know is to look away every 15 minutes. When your eyes are glued to the screen, the eye muscles are strained to one position. If you look away, to an object about 15-20 meters away for about 15 seconds, your eyes get to relax and assume a different position. That will keep the muslces from straining and your eyes from being injured

Thanks a lot, all of you. This is a really important matter to me... itīs ruinning my life...
I make a break every 1 hour. Iīll try your 15 minutes suggestion. As to artificial tears, itīs what Iīm using, but maybe my case is in a deeper stage... that only doesnīt fix my problem. Thanks! Keep your suggestions coming. They will help not only me... but all of us. Knowledge combined, yada yada... maybe some of us went to a better doctor that knows something more... Iīve heard about green glass lensens for use on the pc... donīt know if it works or not... some say that looking at something green (like a plant) for a while, rests our eyes...

Iīm still trying to understand why daīheck would a cactus help... does it absorb radiation, LOL ?
Nevertheless, itīs funny seeing it on top of my monitor, eheh! Well, I can rest my eyes on it, once on a while (15 minutes break), like Undutchable said. Going to the backyard, to get some sun, helps too ![]()

![]() If someone has more info on those protective glasses, please post it. Iīll ask my doctor about them. Please donīt let this thread die...

That's what I thought for awhile too, but my girlfriend is a graphic designer...I went to meet her at work one day, walked into their department and none of the lights were on....just the natural light coming through the window....aparently it's better on your eyes to have more ambient light rather than a major blaring source right near the screen. I tried it, and sure enough it's better...but it won't work at night ![]() |

The only thing I've ever heard about glasses was glasses that you where while on the computer that prevent the glare from the monitor it slef from hitting your eyes, which is suppose to be the bad part on your eyes. Because the glare comes from your monitor and hits your eyes. One other recommendation is not to use any white colored backgrounds, that is the worse for your eyes is white backgrounds or looking at pure white from the monitor, i heard that was the worse for your eyes. Thanks for all the help. Yes, dark background donīt stress the eyes so easily, but most of the web use white backgrounds (GFY is one of the exceptions). I changed the back color of my word processor to black... it really helps...
Well I guess there is no easy miracle for this problem... Iīll try some of those "tear drops" ![]()

Visine kick ass!
I have glasses with antireflexive lens, special designed for people who work in front of a computer. They're about $150 or so..

I hear you man, eye problems really put a damper on your life. About a month ago I had a server virus that resulted in double vision. Not blurred vision, DOUBLE. Its pretty hard to do stuff like that. I hope you get your eyes all straightened out.

Allways use light reflection glasses when you work and look away of the computer every hour but don't look anywhere, look out of the window, especially to the sky, that has a benefic effect to your eyes, at least that is what i heard.

Thanks you all, once again. LCD monitors donīt work for me... because of their low frequency. Iīll buy a Samsung 959NF with 132 Hz. I think my laptop does 50/60 Hz, and that was when I ruined my eyes a little bit, altought itīs a recent TFT model.
Many people says LCD are better... I guess it depends on our eyes. I really have to buy those eye drops that some of you advised... Iīll let you know if it works. If yes, maybe it will work for you too... but if you can do one thing, donīt waste time and do this: use natural solar light to iluminate the room where you work, not electric lights / lamps. Iīve tried eveerything: neon, halogen, you name it. Nothing worked... get a window to outside. I wish I could do that...

I hate when you get off the computer at the end of the day, look in the bathroom mirror before you take a shower and all the blood vessels in your eyes are popped or red in a horizontal line across your eyes a quarter inch thick. My eyes are always tired looking, normally masked by glasses, but when I see that shit i know that good things aren't happening to them.

Yes, Iīm already doing it, and I avoid being at the PC whenever I can. Last week I did that, and my eyes got better a lot. The "funny" thing is that I work so much, ruining my eyes, to allow myself a better workplace/apartment... with better conditions to work. One day I heard something like this: "When we are young, we ruin our health to make some money... when we are old, we waste all our money to recover some health"

My eyes have been bugging me for 3 weeks now. I went to the eyedoctor and got a clean bill of health with my eyes. He gave me some prescription eyedrops (TobraDex) that helped a little with the redness and also he told me to buy "Refresh Tears" for the dryness and burning in the morning when I awake. My eyes are alot less red now but still bug me. (ache and blink alot) He told me it is allergy related. Prior to going to him while in the keys I quit smoking and also was away from my cats/house/computer for 10 days. Nothing changed. Prior to my eyes bugging me I had a sinus infection and I am thinking I still do because my left ear rings constantly and I feel like I'm on a plane sometimes and seem to always have a headache. I am going to give it a few more days and go back to the regular doctor and see WTF is going on with my sinuses. I've never had anything like this before and it totally sucks so I feel your pain.
Cheers, BV |

Iīve been away for some time. Itīs the best solution for these kind of problems
![]() I went to a pharmacy to buy the Advanced Relief Visine, but they only had the normal one. This new Visine seems better: http://www.pfizer.com/chc/visine/visadv.htm "For use as a protectant against further irritation and dryness. " not only for irritation, like the first Visine. I have to print a page, and show it to my Pharmacy. I tried some other tear drops, but they only work for some minutes. 5 minutes later, the eyes are even dryer. As to this thread being so bumped, thatīs good. It may help a lot of us, unlike some other less interesting threads. This thread at least has a point. Our eyes are one of the most important things we have. If some of you donīt care about it, thatīs your problem. Maybe some day youīll regret it. Thanks for all the good opinions ![]() They donīt just help me, but many other persons that check this thread, even if they donīt post. Just check this thread views, and youīll see itīs importance.
