life is meaningless, of course, but that does not mean we should stop looking for a meaning.

'nothing' has meaning

Ok, one last time, quiet, but only because I like ya:
You say: "meaninglessness=freedom=existentialism" And I'm saying: "existentialism=freedom, but not necessarily meaninglessness. See below: I said, Quote:

Simply put, I'm saying that you cannot believe in nothing. Your simply getting lost in the semantics of the word, which is blurring your logic. |

:thumbsup that can be fun... if you define it as such... or is it? hmm.... |

freedom to do fully whatever you will, is never allowed, if there is any sort of meaning attached to anything in the world. however, if we agree that there is no meaning, THEN we are free to do what we want. in other words --------> ExistentialisM (this is the grade 7 version, but it should suffice). take phil 101 :glugglug |

But, nothing is meaningless, never has been. So back to my original argument before we debated semantics; or, interpretation of a word, what you call "extreme basics", Nothing can be meaningless, because we attatch meaning to evrything. And this takes faith, or belief. |

[B] Ok, I do see your point, and you have convinced me that: essentially, existentialsm is meaninglessness. now we are getting somewhere. Quote:
In order to grasp true freedom, you need to embrace meaningless. As soon as something (anything) takes on value, this would mean you no longer have true freedom. I'm not trying to say this is either good or bad, simply a fact. ever heard of bricolage? enjoying the surface? taking things at interface value? that there may be no hope in trying to understand things in a top down fashion anymore? that the best way to explore is through play - like through a smooth gui - rather than try to understand the machine code? relax your grip on meaning :) anyway, i've just been playing around... who knows where my true thoughts might lie. |

Alan Watts, the religion writer who specialized in Eastern religions, and especially Zen, said that the meaning of life is basically death. A life is like an unfinished painting, and the death of the person is what puts that last brushstroke on the canvas.
I'm also reminded of a Woody Allen quip: "I don't want to live forever through my works. I want to live together through never dying." |
this thread reminds me of my first year philosophy course exam.
1/3 of the marks of the exam - which was 40% or 60% (I don't remember exatly - it was worth a LOT though) was one simple question with a whole blank page below it. "WHY?" - that's it - and a bland page - 1/3 of the marks of the exam was only that. Everyone around me wrote VOLUMES of info on it cause they felt they had to fill the page. I wrote only one word as my answer - "because" and got full marks. I loved that prof - I think he gave me full marks just cause that answer took guts with a full blank page there. |

My life is rather insignificant and meaningless in the grand scheme of the universe. But to me, and the people around me, in my own little world, if you will, my life is full of meaning.

"I'm not afraid of dying...I just don't want to be there when it happens." "Human Beings are divided into mind and body. The mind embraces all the nobler aspirations, like poetry and philosophy, but the body has all the fun." "On the plus side, death is one of the few things that can be done just as easily as lying down." |
Life is just a term coined to explain the physical extent of a perceived "reality". Therefor, the only meaning that could be dirrived from it is that of it's own definition, as fabricated by the faculties of that which brought it to the pages of Webster's dictionary:
life ( P ) Pronunciation Key (lf) n. pl. lives (lvz) "The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism." If you want to know if you're life is meaningless, then that would depend on whether or not you can read a dictionary. :winkwink: |
Quiet....
not sure if you are just fucking around and playing philosophists advocate or not, but especially with your upcoming retirement (alledged), you might be interested in learning about this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846 Seriously, a book that when combined with a little practice has really transformed my outlook and philosophy, and gotten me out of some pretty dark places. :2 cents: |
