				Ever Watch This Movie?

What's become of us? They used to make epic films, now it's complete crap like The Transformers and 3D cartoons, premiere cable series about wizards and princesses, white trash meth dealers and biker gangs.

Those were the good ol' days, you'd go downtown, get your Florsheims polished by a cheerful well behaved schvartza and then take your date to a big epic movie that was like 6 hours long. Juicy remembers.

It's much easier hiring 20 geeks to CGI the fuck out of everything rather than hire 14,000 extras at $100 a pop because their self entitlement and their unemployment make them think that they are worth all kinds of money for just being present and taking direction. It's NOT the film industry, it's the hired help coupled with the ability of technology as well as PIRACY that has fucked things up. ![]() I am pretty sure there are a BUNCH of film makers, writers, directors, producers etc. that have wonderful ideas for "EPIC" films. It's the profit/loss margin as well as the budget that does not make it come to fruition. ![]() |

Noah. lol. I agree completely. I thought I was developing ADD but I think movies these days are just not very well made. It seems a low budget piece with real characters is the only thing that can keep my attention. Prisoners from last year is the last truly great film I can think of off hand.

You are right! I think that every time I see a movie made in present days. We live different times, though. Everything adapts. Good thing they still make some good movies, for example American Hustle, great cast, Bale is one of the best actors in Hollywood.

Bottom line, cinematography was an art in the past, today - not so much.

When I was growing up we had a family friend that had survived the Bataan death march and my parents hated that movie since it was so terribly unrealistic in its portrayal of the events.

people who complain about "movies were better back in my day" or "there are no more good rock bands" aren't looking in the right places. Cinema and music have changed over the years. You can't flip on the radio and hear the next great rock band any longer. That's not how the industry works in 2014.

I don't see why you compare Bridge on the River Kwai and act as if there are no good films. Truth be told I think television is the new cinema.

I'm sure audiences in 1957 (when The Bridge on the River Kwai came out) - would've jumped at the opportunity to see Braveheart, Gladiator, Private Ryan, LOTR, ...etc. They still make great epics. They're just fewer and more far between, is all. |

While every decade or generation has its crappy movies, we are seeing more and more reboots, sequels ect now because the cost of making movies has gone up and the risk of making them has gone up so they want to hedge their bets as much as possible.

There are still plenty of good movies made, maybe not as many epics, but plenty of good stuff to watch. As long as people turn out to see Transformers or whatever other crap is out there, they will continue to churn it out. |

One thing I have noticed that has come a long way is "Color timing". Basically it used to mean how long film was left in certain chemicals to achieve a certain look and color.

This process went digital with "Oh Brother where Art Thou" and the name changed to "Digital Intermediate", or "DI", or Digital Color Grading Even if you know what to look for, you can miss the crazy amount of artwork that goes into the DI process.

As to the topic of this thread.. Hollywood is a business and making movies is a very big risk. The movie business has almost become too big for it's own good. The amount of money it costs to make a blockbuster is staggering and it could go to waste with a flop. This is why movie studios stick to the givens.. Super heroes, remakes and part 2, 3 and 4s of successful movies. Just like any other business they want as little risk as possible with as much profit as they can get. Look to independent films if you want some decent non Hollywood crap.

Good story...good actors and directors. The truth that no one really wants to hear is that America has declined and the stories and their quality reflect this.

The average American is not as educated as previous generations nor do they have a chance in hell of ever improving their pathetic lives so they are content to be spoon fed this dismal excuse for "entertainment" to make it seem like there is some meaning to the worthless lives they "live". Simple as that really. |
