69 people shot in Chicago over the weekend

Martial law doesn't work in America. Too many people. There are not anywhere near enough cops or federal agents to control millions of people. Look at the Boston bullshit. There was an army of cops on the streets with M4s and armored vehicles, in ONE neighborhood, looking for ONE guy (and violating everyone's rights in the process). They were met by friendly people with smiles, coffee and scones. Had the people there not been so friendly, the cops wouldn't have had a chance. Picture a rifle in every window. All this and they still couldn't find the guy. In the end, the suspect was apprehended because a neighbor voluntarily called the police and reported suspicious activity in his back yard. There is simply no way to declare martial law on a major American city and expect success.

Poverty, lack of opportunity, break-down of family and social values are the problem not guns.

I'm an ant-gun guy. I really believe that less guns = less murders. Course police'n'feds is an exception. However strict gun use laws must be applied to them too when we are talking about civilians (army is another thing of course). The firearms must be forbidden for civilians and the gun use must be strictly regulated for the police too.

Plenty of people live in unincorporated areas that have no police force.
These people will cease to exist overnight without their own guns.

I could not agree more, and I was born into that environment. However, I had a teenage mother who was bold and determined to change the conditions around her and her handsome child. She went to school, got a couple of jobs and eventually got us out of the chaos. But her case is rare. I cannot say the same for many others in my family. Most ended up in Alex's statistics.

One more example. I live in a country where handguns are forbidden. So I have never (please read it literally), never been in trouble against a guy with a gun. So all my friends and all my relatives (for all our lives we have never seen a gun on the street). Once again: NEVER. And that's true. Personally I always been a good shooter. I've started to train with a gun shooting (modern pentathlon) when I was a 10 y.o. kid (that was is my first gun BTW), so I know what I'm talking about when I say that handguns must be forbidden for the civilians. I'm not a pussy and (as many Rusians) I know how to use guns or assault rifles very efficiently (I shoot-down human-sized targets from 350 meters with an old school AK47 - just for a note )

Sure but these are very different crimes. According to the statistics 70% of murders (don't even mention the war zone regions like Dagestan, Ingushetia etc) in my country are commuted by drunk unemployed bums in their shacks with a kitchen knives. What does it mean for a regular people? This means that if you are walking by the street say in Moscow, you won't be killed in a gang fight. Your children won't be shot down in the school etc. Just compare the murder/rape rate with the "lowest-ever" one in NYC for the last year and you will be very surprised.

I don't feel for those useless drunk-head redneck that that kill each other with a knife in their own houses, because they have almost not danger for me and my family. On the other hand, it would be a real different story if they had guns or assault rifles. This is what I'm talking about.

The same applies to the cops. BTW. They are not that scared and brutal than in in the States just because they don't expect that everyone has a gun. So love police brutality and almost zero people shot by police here.

Sounds kind of low actually, for a US city with over 8 million people in and around it.

DC had 3 dead and 4 injured in just ONE of their many shootings over last weekend. I want comparative stats before I go judging Chicago too harshly. :D
