Each one of these books had a general a few hundred years later to enforce them. The rise of the city state made it necessary to have the populace control themselves. What better than a myth about an unseen unknowable force who for some reason has all the same goals your king / high priest does, never performs any miracles lately but did all the time a few hundred years back and seems to arbitrarily punish people for their "sins", yeah, that's the ticket. Religion has one purpose, to become the middle man between humans and what they fear most, death, thereby utterly controlling them and harnessing all their energy.

We are chained to primitive thoughts about mythical Gods that were written thousands of years ago that we pass on and brain wash our children with, so they can get older and brain wash their children.
