The greatest pure rock album ever produced was Boston's first album. It still holds up today and even kids like it. But they were certainly not the greatest rock band. I would say that to be the greatest rock band you would have to have put out many great albums over a long period and be fairly consistent. I am not a Rolling Stones fan but they would be a contender for "best".

:stoned Out of the Blue...Into the Black...

Most of the bands listed in your poll are definitely worthy of consideration as among the best rock and roll bands in history, although skimming through your list also revealed to me that on different days I feel different ways, and so my definition of best would be subjective at best, and subject to change.

I'm just happy that there is so much good rock and roll music to celebrate with and listen to...

I went with the Beatles. While I don't really like them myself, you have to admit they more or less created modern rock and roll. They were the first, everyone else followed.

Out of that list, my favorite would be Queen. Then U2.

The Doctors are a musicians' band, major influence on some of the great bands in history.

Also note the resemblance between the lead singer and Teencat.

Hard to argue with that list. I have never really been a big Zeppelin fan, but I can appreciate the artistry and what they did for the music world.

On my personal list, I might put Pink Floyd at #3, just out pure preference, but I would still rank Zep very high.

That is a very good list.

And I agree... Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock n roll band ever, followed by the Beatles and the Stones.

You gotta take into the equation all of the following factors... raw talent, innovation, sales, marketing, rock star power, antics, originality, length of original line up, longevity of music, loyalty, groupies, excess, deaths and copycats.

Led Zeppelin kills it in each single category.

And what's more, they didn't have a chance to fade away or become a parody of themselves. When Bonham died the broke up immediately.

The Canuck in me was tempted to vote Rush.

And of course the Beatles, Zep and the Stones are obvious frontrunners.

But of all the groups - I own more Van Halen vinyls/cassettes/CDs - so they got my vote.

I figure that the Beatles kicked the most ass and moved music the most in the studio and in songwriting.

But The Rolling Stones have to be the number one rock band in history. When I think of a band...I think of a group of guys who are greater than the sum of their parts.

That's the Stones for sure.
And their songwriting over the decades has withstood the test of time.

And then there is that HUGE factor to being a REAL band: Playing live.

I just saw The Rolling Stones at The MGM here in Vegas in May of 2013.

I just looked at their schedule...they are STILL on that world tour! And they just played Germany on June 19th

That's a band that has been together over 50 years and still kicking it. So if I put all the factors in: Songwriting, live performance, longevity, influence on music and fashion, etc., etc. the Stones get my vote.

They are one of a kind. I'm not sure any rock band will ever be able to match what they've done in their career.

And the funny thing is...if you went back to the 1960's you would have figured they would have been the first band to have all died and/or broke up.

Well, the way I've always broken it down is like this:

There's The Beatles and then there's 'everybody else'.

And of 'everybody else' my favorite band is The Who. The Stones, while I love their 68-81 period (Mick Taylor replacing Brian jones, then Taylor being replaced by Ron Wood) my tastes run closer to Lou Reed, David Bowie, Bob Marley, CSNY, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

Yes I am 'eclectic'. LOL

PS: The Red Hot Chili Peppers do not belong on that list. And the Spin Doctors? LMAO at those stoned douschebags being included. With what, one hit? :D

Well... I'm with Jack Black on Zeppelin. Their music doesn't date.

Second would be the Stones, because their music mostly doesn't date either, no matter who the guitarist was, and "Sympathy For The Devil" is almost one of the most singular, powerful and "rock" songs ever.

The Beatles can date, depending, though their influence kills the Stones and Zep because they go so far outside the blues "box".

:D

I'd argue the Beatles weren't a rock band--they started off as a pop band and went off and sort of created their own category. I'd vote The Who first, Stones second.

Their early stuff was white teenagers doing 'race music', British Buddy Hollies.

They definitely transformed into a genre of their own, musical sponges and chameleons. We haven't seen anything like them in the past 50 years and maybe never will.

I say Guns 'N Roses just because of potential. if it wasn't for Rose they would be for sure.
Almost every one of their songs was a hit.

In terms of album sales, the Beatles get the nod by a wide margin (259 million units).

The next four album sellers are considered solo artists (Elvis 207m, Michael Jackson 172m, Madonna 165m, and Elton John 161m).

Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd take the 2nd and 3rd place respectively for rock bands, at 138m and 114m.

The Rolling Stones came rolling in behind AC/DC and Queen, however they did edge ABBA.

I had to vote Sabbath. They're the grandfathers of metal. Even a band like Smashing Pumpkins wouldn't exist without them.

Spin Doctors? If you're going to include 90s jam bands Phish or Blues Traveler would have been more appropriate.

Albeit I like the Spin Doctors, and marketed & promoted their first album like mad when it came out...really loved it, in fact!
I can't agree that they might be one of the best rock bands in "history".
First of all, not enough "historical time" has gone by, in the rock era, from the time they emerged...and certainly not "that many" bands that are, or have been, influenced to whatever degree, have become so popular that the Spin Doctors would truly outweigh other rock bands as a majorly influential band.

IE: Beatles, Stones, Sabbath, AC/DC, even KISS are more widely regarded as having influenced major bands, especially highly regarded rock bands of the 80's / early 90's, that are still very popular today. {Motley Crue, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, blah, blah, blah, I could go on and on, but you certainly should see my point}.
