Turkish Gaza flotilla will have military escort, group says

http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/1.607508

Tourism minister calls on Israelis to shun Turkey, after operation to bring home some 3,000 stranded tourists.

"The Turkish pro-Palestinian organization IHH announced that its second Gaza flotilla will be launched soon - and will be afforded protection by the Turkish Navy, Israel's NRG reported on Sunday.

The group's chairman told local Turkish media that the mission, titled 'Freedom Flotilla II,' was in the process of finalizing the legal paperwork needed to commence on the trip, and would embark as soon as it got the necessary permissions.

This fleet, as opposed to the group's previous one that was intercepted by the Israeli navy in 2010, would be protected by the Turkish Navy, he said.

Ankara, has so far not officially confirmed the report, according to Israel Radio. "

So their military is going to violate the waters of another country AND they are giving warning about it? Sweet!

Seriously, all kidding aside... They did this back in 2010 and when the Israelis boarded their ship, shots were fired, people died. So this time they'll go in armed and expect something different?

I understand what they are doing, but there are procedures for such things. You can sail a cargo ship into the US (or any other major port in the world), but you have to obey their laws and their procedures. I'm pretty confident ships dock in Gaza every day and bring them supplies; There are nearly two million people in Gaza and they must be getting supplied somehow. (In fact, there is a port and it deepened so it can take international ships.) But it seems to me the way Turkey is doing this is going to violate Isreal's rules.

Gaza is not part of Israel and the Israeli blockade there is illegal. I gather the whole point of this is to not let the world forget that Gaza is under blockade, and that the people there have no rights whatsoever which is another one of the many reasons there is conflict there. No ships go directly to Gaza, they have to go to Ashdod to be inspected.

Whether or not the Turks will escort the ships this time is not decided, but I imagine they will be 100% ready with the media at least to record what happens.

Egypt is also blockading their border with Gaza with some exceptions for the medical or humanitarian evacuation of persons only -- no materials or supplies are allowed ingress or egress. Why do you think that is?

Considering that there are 2 or more Israeli Navy operated, German built Dolphin class, nuclear armed submarines off the Gaza coast as well as surface naval ships enforcing a blockade of the Gaza coast and its port, trying to run the blockade would be a very bad idea.
