Internext Workshop to Address 'How to Hire a Programmer'

Industry vet Edgeprod will conduct a workshop designed to help company managers hire a competant programmer.

Internext New Orleans show organizers are very pleased to announce the scheduling of a workshop that will address a rare subject for a webmaster trade event: "How to Hire and Manage a Programmer." The workshop, which will take place Friday, May 30 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the River Bend Ballroom of the New Orleans Downtown Marriott, will be conducted by Domenic R. Merenda, aka Edgeprod, who wants to pull back the veil on hiring experienced developers who write maintainable, testable and scalable code, as well as strategies for keeping these talented professionals engaged and productive.

"Hiring a competent programmer instead of a BROgrammer can be the difference between the ultimate success or failure of a project," said Edgepord. "My strategies for hiring and maintaining development talent are time-tested and results-proven."

Edgeprod elaborated on what he will cover in the hour-long workshop that is designed for company owners and managers using non-technical terminology:

"Custom web development can be a costly endeavor, full of potential pitfalls," he said. "These obstacles crop up not only during the building process, but for years to come as the code is maintained by subsequent programmers and teams. Learn how to engage experienced developers who will see your project to fruition instead of novices who may abandon the project midstream, or arguably worse, write code that is useless in the long run. From identifying desirable skill-sets and asking the right questions all the way to verifying previous work, this seminar will demystify the process of choosing an ideal candidate.

"Hiring these individuals is only half the battle," he added. "The second part of the seminar deals with keeping coders engaged and contributing, without the typical drop in productivity. Strategies for programmer motivation, workflow patterns and team hierarchy are dissected and analyzed."

It sounds like you've ever never built serious technology, or didn't know you were getting a subpar project. The hiring practices for programmers in this industry are abysmal. Ask any of us who endlessly look at other people's awful code. Some MAJOR projects in adult aren't even object-oriented. Many aren't PSR-0 through PSR-2 compliant. Hardly any companies have people who use version control. The vast majority don't even use dependency injection.

Hire the right talent, and it's cheaper in the long run, more efficient, and usually solves time-to-market problems better.

You're right that many companies started out with questionable coding standards. But the difference between talented developers writing prototype software and a less-than-qualified programmer making mistakes because they don't know any better is night and day.

I've also made a number of contributions to open source software, including Linux utilities, programs, and LimaMUD (a text-based multi-user dungeon software written in C and LPC).

Currently, I am the VP of Engineering at LeadWrench, managing a team of developers to produce enterprise-level software across a number of industries. We're in a major hiring phase right now, and we've been successfully on-boarding excellent candidates, as well as cutting loose those who don't meet muster before their efforts affect our products.

Sadly, the videographer had another engagement shortly after we started. I was very pleased with the direction it took, the questions asked, etc. The feedback afterward was very positive, so that felt good.
