Just wondering if any have ever gone into business and had to close their doors for not making a profit.
Have any content providers ever gone out of business?

yeah there's lots of guys who've tried and gone out of business, but you wouldn't probably have heard of them because that was part of their problem, not many people knew they were around.
Some go out of biz cuz their shit sucks or they can't shoot enough content to make it work. I've gone to content sites and there are like 3 models, couple sets of each. Guy is doing it on a shoestring, hopes the sales on those sets will let him go out and shoot more, building his biz up as he goes along. Failure.
if u can find some old pages on webmaster resource sites with content provider listings you'll see a number sites that no longer exist.
there should be room for tons of content providers making decent livings, just get a calculator out and figure out how many TGP galleries, MGP galleries, free sites, AVS sites, paysites are out there, how much content is on all those 100's and 100's of thousands of webpages. If even half the content out there was legally licensed content providers would be in fine shape, anybody with good quality content would be sitting pretty.I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!Comment

I ask because I was thinking about making niche content that's hard to find but I dont know what kind of an investment I'd need to have to stay afloat until it's profitable.Comment

Sure.. one provider is owing me $1,500 exclusive content, vids and pics from xmas and their site won't even load.

I'm in the same boat as you. i will soon have a licensed content store and i really don't know how big the potential market is, what kind of sales projections to make. i've asked people but of course i can't expect people to tell me their sales numbers so I'm going mostly on guesstimates. Even if people gave me hard numbers, i'd never know if they were bullshitting high or low. So there's no other way to do it but just do it and see how it goes.Originally posted by Marcus

if you're niche you stand a better chance to succeed, as long as the niche isn't some micro micro niche that only 2 people are potential customers for. Even if it's a big niche, BBW, Teen, Amateurs, Asian, whatever, should check to see how many content providers are competing in that niche.I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I was just about to mention RAM. That was fairly well known at the time but with a stupid business model ie you didn't have to pay them straight away. Seems they closed before anybody started making paymentsOriginally posted by Danielle

This guy didn't know how to run a content provider. He offered cds of 5000pics or so, I don't really remember, and gave out a free set of 100pics. The chicks were REALLY ugly, very cheap stuff, he shut it down in just a week or so.Originally posted by kronic

The best thing for a content provider, it not having to make a living out of it...that's also improving the quality.

I know of one company with almost the same name as us? 1content. I have seen them in some resource listings but link does not work so they must be out of business and I do hope that we not get mixed up with them ?
As in all other business the strong survive ... you need a good product, you need to promote and marketing your product and you need to have some good customer service.
If not you will soon be out of business.
We opened just a month ago with all our own material and I must say I am positively surprised how good we have been received.
At the same time I have also heard from some of the larger players on the scene that they are a little nervous to do business with a new company. But so far orders are coming in every day and its our plan to stay in business for a long time, even though competition is hard. But that is only good, that way unhealthy business will die... and I think most webmasters know quality when they see it.

Ive yet to see a big player in the content biz to go down.
However ive probably seen more then 20 of the really small guys crash and burn in the last year or so.
Clients are very loyal so i dont think you will see any of the bigger shops like Amp, Markham, Matrix etc etc etc go down
