And so we bid farewell to a furry friend...

Casey - our 15 yr. old tortie office cat.

She'd been a constant presence here in our production office from the very beginning.

A gentle soul.

Lost her to feline cancer and had her put down this morning.

Rest in peace, my friend.

Thanks guys.

We've had to do it several times in the past...it just never gets easier.

We'd taken her in to the vet last week and got the bad news - oral cancer. Brought her home and kept her comfortable to say our goodbyes. She had a rough night last night, her breathing was affected - so we knew the time had come.

The wife and I were a pair of wrecks at the Humane Society, though. There's just no instruction manual on handling these things.

It's tough, I know. We still have four remaining - so it won't be the last time dealing with it obviously.

My parents recently had their cat put down...around the same age, 15 I think. Although they've had cats almost all their lives - they've swore they won't get another. They're getting up there in age, too...so they worry a cat would outlive them and they wouldn't want to orphan it.

I am truly sorry for your loss. It seems so unfair that we can get so attached to them when they are with us for such a relatively short time.

I actually had the oral cancer concern with my girl cat a couple of weeks ago. As I was stretched out on the couch watching TV, she fell asleep laying on my chest as she usually does, but this time there was a spot of drool on my shirt when I got up. She isn't a drooler, so that piqued my attention. Later though, she let out a cry of pain when I was stroking the whisker pads on her face, so I made an appointment with the vet the next morning. It turns out that she just had a cavity, but since she also has a heart murmur there was additional bloodwork done to see if she was OK for surgery. The bloodwork came back OK, but x-rays revealed additional cavities under the gumline - some effectively severing the teeth. In all, she had to have seven teeth extracted, so what would have been a $500 vet bill turned into a $1500 bill, and that's not counting the initial exam and bloodwork.

Is there something wrong that makes you say that...or just the age?

We've had two that lived into their 20th year in the past. And my wife's parents had one that was 22.

The drooling was the first sign for us. And then she developed difficulty chewing the hard cat food (we quickly switched to soft food for her). And then she started swiping the side of her face with her paw while making a sort of retching sound (like trying to cough up a hairball or something).

As difficult as it was, the decision was in the best interest of her quality of life.

its such a hard thing to do. pets are often around us more than anyone else, especially for those who work from home. having to put down the family cat we had since i was 8 years old until 24 was one of the hardest things i've had to do.

Very true. Casey was always present in the office, hoppin' up on my lap or curling up on the carpet below my chair. She loved the open window that overlooked the street...she could watch people walk their dogs along the sidewalk.

My condolences. We almost lost a new pup to Parvo a couple months back.

Lost a cat once to coyotes. It's never easy. RIP.

Very sorry for your loss.

We had to put down a cat two years ago. Our beloved himalayan of 15 1/2 years. It was fucking awful.

My other cat will be 19 soon and she is still doing quite well. Hope to have her around a few more years. When I think of her not being with me anymore, it makes me sick to stomach. Anyway... I "get it" and feel bad for ya... fuckin sucks.

Here's pictures of our kitten that might cheer you up a bit.

Her name is Shadow and like our other cat, we drove from Montreal to the town of Sherbrooke to get her. We didn't want another cat but a friend sent us a picture and decided we had to have her.

She's a real pain in the ass who tries to catch my mouse cursor on my screen, sits in my lap and chews the phone wire, or insists on trying to sleep on my shoulders. Totally affectionate purring little beast. I love it.

Cats are awesome and I'm sorry you lost yours. Putting down a cat or dog or other family pet is a terrible experience. Try to be happy though that you gave it a great life and that your cat repaid you 10 times over with lots of love. Pretty soon the feeling of loss will go away somewhat, but never completely for obvious reasons. You'll be wanting another cat soon and it will be just as awesome.

Holy shit, I was about to call bullshit and then decided to look it up. The world record for the oldest cat is??? *DRUMROLL*

The oldest cat ever is Creme Puff who was born on 3 August 1967 and lived until 6 August 2005 - an amazing 38 years and 3 days! Creme Puff lived with her owner, Jake Perry, in Austin, Texas, USA.

Jake Perry was also the owner of Grandpa Rex Allen, the previous holder.

Also, sorry for your loss. It's hard when a pet dies.
