depends, i use my phone as laptop replacement on short travels or when i am not at home or at my office - i can do most of my business on there.

so it's nice when it's fast with a big screen and good connectivity

I like it except for cyanagen, I don't think they are a robust enough outfit to handle the needs of an OS that comes standard on a device. I went through the cyanagen nightmare with cm9, took prolly 2 years for a stable version release.

Apple's advantage isn't the device, it's the ecosystem. Nobody has built an adequate competitor to the iTunes App Store.

People didn't stay with aol because it had the best email software. They stay because it's a simple ecosystem.

When a competitor builds a better App Store they will gut apple's market share. The same way browser development and google search gutted aol.

Until then, having the best device means very little to most consumers.

i think we're talking about different things here

all i was aiming at was tech specs vs. price

otherwise it's just another Android phone

i looked at different stats but overall Android has now a market share of over 60% up to almost 80% in the smartphone market worldwide. so Android seems to appeal to consumers even without itunes.

and i think you will also not disagree when i say that some Apple users are slightly unhappy about the lack of screensize and some of them might have switched by now - itunes or not

and last but not least: i just posted this because i came across it and thought it's interesting - you on the other hand sound like you own an iphone

a flagship device isn't necc. a sales leader but it is a technology leader, a device crammed full of the latest technology. A flagship killer has to be loaded with tech, not appeal to most consumers. this device fits that.

As DamianJ pointed out, the most appealing devices are those middle of the road, well-priced phones with a decent amount of features, not flagship devices.

"Everybody has it" is kind of an exaggeration. A quick google search will tell you that some have iPhones, some have sansungs, some have Motorola's, etc. His view might be restricted to his own circle of friends. In my own social circle, everyone I know has a different phone.

Lets agree to your labeling. The handset war is basically finished. Other than battery life most people are generally happy with any of the major handsets on the market.

As soon as people could get their email and browse easily without AOL, AOL fell off a cliff. The same will happen with iphones and the appstore... but not until someone builds a countervailing ecosystem.

you're off on a tangent. this isn't about android v apple.

this phone is being called a flagship killer based on price/value in the flagship segment of devices, regardless of affiliation (android or apple). it's not being hyped as an iphone killer.

it's got = flagship tech at a lower price than other flagship devices, thus the branding.

that's not the reason btw - i just like to have control over my data, store them where and how i want and move it between devices the way i want. and since an Android phone is like a USB HD, i can do that.

learned that the hard way with a Macbook Pro and my biz partner had his iMac 2 times already in repair to change the screen - the 3rd time he did it himself.

and just compare:

iPhone 5S 16GB - $649
iPhone 5S 64GB - $849

OnePlus One 16GB - $299
OnePlus One 64GB - $349

and the latter has superior specs in almost every category

It doesn't have much potential to annoy Apple because Apple handsets aren't subject to price as much as you seem to believe. Having a much better phone at a much lower price wont cost Apple much in the way of marketshare. The same isn't true for Samsung if the lower price better phone shares the same android ecosystem.

It occurred to me the company might have even chose the cm11 os to really differentiate and separate this phone from android. There are no other devices shipping stock with a CM operating system and it's an interesting choice too.
I think I can count on 1 hand how many stable releases of cm there have been since cm9. And it's not really better than android, it's =, android is open and free, like CM so there are no cost savings between the 2 systems.

Nevertheless, I am going to take a real close look at this phone in July when my current contract is up.

You can do that with an iPhone too, but you don't need a USB anything to do it. Your music, videos, etc, can be stored on your Phone And / Or your computer and / or cloud. You can play your music on your phone or beam it to your TV or wireless speakers using Airplay, etc.

I've owned many iPhones and dropped them all several times. The only time I ever broke one was dropping it on a the cement sidewalk, cracking the back cover. The phone still works.

But also don't forget you're not just paying for the hardware. It comes with some pretty great software. There is lots of free software for it, and the operating system is great. You also pay for the guarantee, the fantastic service and technical support, etc. Plus I'm not sure if you have ever listen to music on an iPhone, but it the sound quality is excellent too. On top of that, it syncs easily and perfectly, the first time without any headaches, to my iMac and other apple devices. Godam, they all work just so well. To me, the cost is 100% justified.

Dude... if he had to change his screen times, he probably threw his computer around. I have 2 MacBooks. The only time I ever dropped one was on a plane a couple of months ago. I dropped it from a height of about 4 feet, onto the plane's carpet. Short height / soft landing maybe but its a LAPTOP. Not only did it boot, but there was not even a scratch or dent in it.

And by the way, Apple Mac's hold their value alot longer than PC's do. A little off topic sure.. just sayin'...

Sure, but most people buy phones with a plan. When you do, the phones become alot cheaper. Apple's weebsite at http://store.apple.com/us/buy-iphone/iphone5s lists the 16GB version at $199, and the 64GB version at $399 - that's $500 less than your quote. Personally though, I would never buy a phone attached to a plan because at least hear in Canada anyway, the true cost of the phone is buried in the plan and you end up paying alot more for the phone. It's always cheapest in the long run to buy a phone and plan separately in my opinion.

And compare the OnePlus One with an unlocked HTC1, Galaxy s4, etc

There are premium phones and budget phones. That's why the whole market share thing is ridiculous at the moment. You wouldn't compare market share of Tesla/BMW/etc with that of Hyundai or Honda.

It sure likes like a nice phone for the price though. But, it's not gonna worry the high end hand set makers as it is a different market entirely. It should worry the budget phone makers as it looks much nicer than any $300 handset on the market.
