Purchasing a Security Certificate?

anyone know how much it costs and where to purchase a security certificate for your site so that when someone goes to the signup page it is secure.

just go to Google Image Search........find a GIF image of a lock.

people are stupid, just slap the picture of the lock above the form on the page and put some text like 'This page is 100% secure with 128-bit encryption and the picture of the lock you see above'.

But bad certificates. Go and click a "buy now" button and see what happens
http://www.instantssl.com/products/ssl.html

Edit: not the one in the middle. That one doesn't use ssl.

You can create your own ssl cert, but it won't help the site seem much more secure, given that the browser will pop-up a warning when it doesn't find it in the certification authorities list.

hahahha... quality. it'd be even better if you used one of those really lame floating script boxes, so it'd float over the bottom of the page, close to the real one.

well, ok, i don't care if it's a "trusted" cert or not, it's for my own purposes, i just want a secure conenction. basically just encrypted to the browser for a small project of my own for mobility.

i figure if it's coming from my own machine, i can trust it, and tell the browser to, since i know where the data and all is coming from.

You just need a self-signed cert. Takes about 10 seconds to make. Search google. 100% just as secure - you just get a browser warning which you setup to remember. I use my own certs at my sites for maintenance things
