A 43 foot Wellcraft Scarab - powered by THREE Buick 500CID motors @ 600hp each.

Back before gas went crazy, it would still cost just over $100 for an hour out on the lake.

It got to point where I would only take it out 1-2 times a year, so ended up selling it, and took a loss, because of the gas prices, there where not very many buyers :(

My last boat. ....and when it comes to ongoing maintainance and fuel costs, the only thing more expensive than an ocean-going boat is a jet. You better really love being on the water all the time, or never buy a large boat!

Boats seem to be the worst "investment" unless you just have money to burn. My one buddy has an old piece of shit but it has twin 454s. When I seen him fill it up once and the cost was over $1000 I couldn't believe it. Now I know why you see so many people just sitting on their boats in the marina.....they obviously can't afford to drive them.

Naughty Webby 04-11-2014 10:20 AM

I can see a good-sized marina packed with boats out my window. Even on nice summer weekend days, it's very rare to see anyone actually take their boat out or bring it back. Sad really. The only exception is a prominent local billionaire - his huge boat is always coming and going.

My grandfather used to say "a boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into"

Also I had an investor with a cigarette boat, he said if you floored it you could literally watch the gas gauge creep lower, and it was something like $1,500 to fill up. He said he'd fill it up the first time and then ask for volunteers, and nobody ever seemed to want to go out on the boat... ;)
