Enter Domain Experts

As most know I promote the Japanese/Asian niche content, but now looking to start a mainstream website. I did run an awesome Handball website from 2001-2010, but moved to adult for the money. One Wall Handball was just too small of a community to make money from, I enjoyed it but income was more important, plus Facebook stole so much traffic.

Currently in adult between so much free stuff, plus Google playing games with indexing, income has been cut in half. So looking to add a mainstream website for future income, my other passionate interest besides Handball is trading stocks. I feel promoting something your passionate about keeps you motivated to working on.

So I am looking at a finance domain on the secondary market, and the domain is like 15k. It is very generic and will work for this future project. But the domain is on a .info extension, the domain should also keep its value long term. At 1st I really only seen 1 successful .info domain, MTA.info which is used for the mass transit authority of NYC. They heavily advertise it with banners in subways and buses.

Any opinions on dropping this kind of money on a .info?

I would never do it.

On a .com yes. A .info will never bring type-in traffic by itself. It'll always be a liability and you'll always wish you got a .com.

Note the previous poster and what he or she said here:

"It'll always be a liability and you'll always wish you got a .com"

That is 100% correct. When you start pushing that .info you'll realise that as much as 20% of your traffic will end up at the .com and then you'll suddenly find out that customers have been going to the .com by accident - a total waste of 20% of your marketing effort simply by selecting something other than a .com for your main site.

Can you be a success on any extension with good development=yes. But all the promotion you do will definitely bleed free traffic to the .Com version as many by default type .Com.

Private message me more info on the "finance" project with top budget and I'll run a quick scan and see if anything currently in inventory can work or fit the budget. Have 500+ owned/brokered mainstream domains from 1998-2014 most priced between 1-25k with a few gems higher.

I know what domain you are talking about. I think in this particular case $15k for a .info isn't a bad thing if it consumes a reasonable portion of the budget. But if this is one of those situations where the domain name is by far the biggest expense, then you may want to brainstorm a $10 [brandname].com instead and use the saved money on development and advertising.

how much a domain worths doesn't even always conclude how valuable it will bring to your project. domain is just another business for domainers, so never count on the price when it comes to evaluate what to use for ur business. U should have a more clear business goal, for example, do u want to focus solely on search engine? or other branding, any domains work with wutever promotions going on but u need to have a plan, then find the best combination, dumping 15k on a domain hoping to make you anything back is not smart. It really depends on how u setup your business.

I would buy a brandable domain name with the top extensions.

I can see how you'd want the "keyword" domain name, but at the end of the day thats only good for type-ins. SE's don't seem to be giving any preferential treatment to exact matches anyway. Save that $$$ and develop something unique and memorable. Your ad dollars wont bleed to the owner of the .com/.net's either.
