Pot is bad for you. So is smoking, drinking, and eating fast food. Nothing new.

I had a neighbor who was a doctor (cancer research) and chronic pot smoker. - he would describe autopsies and the fact that it was immediately clear the person was a pot smoker the second you see the brain.

To those who choose to ignore this, remember that in the late 50s and early 60s there were studies on the the harmful effects of tobacco smoking that millions of people ignored, too.

Yep smoking is bad for you, drinking is bad for you, eating red meat is bad for you, fucking is bad for you...basically LIVING and enjoying life in any way at all is "bad" for you.

I'm more than happy to live "bad" than to be a boring fuck.

A longtime buddy of mine from back in the early 80s was always an avid pot smoker. Rarely saw him without a joint fired up. He came from a family of pot smokers - mother, brothers and his sister. It was just his way of life. Everything revolved around it.

And yet, despite the pot - back in the 80s, you'd have difficulty finding a more charismatic and interesting character than him. He was quite a unique lad - we always said they broke the mold when he came along. Hard-working, ambitious, skilled...we always thought he'd do something with his life.

That was then.

It's really interesting to talk with him these days - I can sit in on a conversation with him and he'll discuss three different topics in the same sentence. He starts with one idea...forgets what it is, shifts to another mid-sentence...and then invariably drifts to a third notion by the end of the sentence, completely forgeting what started the sentence. His ability to hold a coherent train of thought is totally absent.

The charisma, personal hygiene, spark and ambition is long gone. Today he drifts from place to place, his health deteriorating. Red-flagged as a deadbeat by a long list of landlords. Borrows and never repays friends and family.

You know whats REALLY bad for you? Not living a little. Here's some advice:

- Make love to a beautiful woman
- Enjoy a steak and red wine once in a while
- Drive fast once in a while
- Have a beer, have a whiskey, have a toke.
- Jump out of a plane.

Experience. Live.

SilentKnight....I know plenty of guys who are complete opposites of what they were in their "glory days".

It could be smoking pot did it to him. Or it could be a long list of things.
Life tends to break people down.

I personally don't smoke pot. It puts me to sleep. lol

But I do party. And of course, damn near everyone that I know smokes pot...it's like drinking beer in terms of how many people do it.

If I were to single out something to "stop" doing...I doubt very seriously that Pot would even be on the radar.
I'd tell people that they should stop eating so much processed sugar (making them fat), and stop pouring mountains of salt on their food. And switch to vaping instead of smoking cigarettes.

Those are things that will kill you.

As for guys I've known in my life who were "stoners"...most of the ones I've kept in touch with are making great money and are still highly motivated in life.
Can't say the same for the many, many alcoholics I've known. Several of them are already dead from liver disease.
The rest are mostly useless.

Having said that...I love to drink alcohol. lol
But I have never had an addictive personality (except when it comes to pussy).

I tend to not believe anything coming from any agency in tune with Murdoch's companies. His "news" agencies spew the most absurd bullshit on the planet. With that said, I've also read "studies" which came from Fox that also stated that MJ is linked to schizophrenia...which is a fucking joke. In most cases MJ is used as an anti-psychotic. They also need to learn the differences between THC and CBD.

From the actual study (not a newspaper article):

Quote:
This preliminary study has several caveats. First, the sample size does not provide power to examine complex interactions such as sex differences. Because this is a cross-sectional study, causation cannot be determined, although marijuana exposure parametrically correlated with structural differences, which suggests the possibility of causation.

Longitudinal studies are needed to determine whether marijuana exposure explicitly leads to the differences observed in this study.

Furthermore, this study did not include quantifiable marijuana metabolite levels, which would have provided further information about the amount of marijuana exposure. This measure could be incorporated into future studies as a complementary measure to detailed timeline follow-back measures of drug use.

Finally, age of onset was collected for marijuana use only. Early exposure to alcohol may have also affected brain structure.
Quote:
"Marijuana participants were not excluded if they had used other illegal drugs in the past;"

Some comments from readers:

Quote:
A tiny study, not a statistically valid sample, plus it is questionable if strict experimental and scientific rigor was maintained. In short it hardly seems worth reporting on, and reporting this "study" without any appropriate scrutiny or critical examination may actually be a public disservice. Very disappointing article in the broader context of what should constitute good journalism, or even good non-fiction writing.
Quote:
Seems to me someone wrote this post trying to get a negative vibe of marijuana, they kind of dance around the science trying to make it sound bad.
Quote:
"In the brains of marijuana users, natural rewards are less satisfying."

Words from the reporter, not quoted from scientist conducting the study or supported by conclusions in the study summary.
Quote:
What a bunch of pseudo-academic silliness.

Saying that a behavior causes morphological changes (physical appearance) is one thing. Going on to say that "a little recreational use shouldn?t cause a problem, if someone is doing OK with work or school...Our data directly says this is not the case" is hogwash akin to phrenology. The size of bumps on the skull or in the brain is relevant. Is the person happy? Productive? Less stressed-out? Those are the things that matter.
Quote:
From what I read this is not science but BS. No real data; no real controls, just another waste of our tax dollars.

Also nobody has any real idea of what different parts of the brain do. It could be that the smokers will be better off then the nonsmokers. This does not seem to be research.

Maybe we should ask the President or the Jr Senator from Ky, since all pot heads are the same and ruined for life; oh wait that's a lie...
Quote:
Music: It's in your head, changing your brain

"I think there's enough evidence to say that musical experience, musical exposure, musical training, all of those things change your brain," says Dr. Charles Limb, associate professor of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at Johns Hopkins University.
Quote:
Get out of here with such a small sample size. Increase the sample size 100 fold then data may be legit!
Quote:
The research was supported by grants 14118, 026002, 35 026104, 027804 and 034093 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and grant 052368 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, all of the National Institutes of Health. The Office of National Drug Control Policy and Northwestern Medicine's Warren Wright Adolescent Center also supported the research.
Quote:
This is truly high science...

"Because the study was retrospective, researchers did not know the THC content of the marijuana, which can range from 5 to 9 percent or even higher in the currently available drug."

"With the findings of these two papers," Breiter said, "I've developed a severe worry about whether we should be allowing anybody under age 30 to use pot unless they have a terminal illness and need it for pain."

There are actually some valid studies that have found a link between MJ and schizophrenia, IIRC that smoking weed can act as a trigger for latent schizophrenic tendencies, i.e. it can basically open the floodgates of that condition. Especially high THC strains, though I agree the mainstream media hasn't yet caught on to the differences of THC & CBD - it'll happen though as things are legalized.

I'm pro-MJ and think when used responsibly it can be a nice little recreational substance, plus maybe even help some people with chronic pain/nausea/etc with *fewer* side effects than the regular pharmaceuticals normally used for those conditions. But the hardcore pro-MJ activists guys who say it can save the world and that it's perfectly 100% absolutely harmless are just as off-base as the OP here. The truth is complicated and full of nuance & gray areas, something that most of society has trouble with.

A drug is a substance which may have medicinal, intoxicating, performance enhancing or other effects when taken or put into a human body or the body of another animal and is not considered a food or exclusively a food.

drug addiction, is a compulsive need to use drugs in order to function normally

dude, ur posting a link from the #1 rated propaganda channel.

It's hillarious which news topics they attempt to brainwash their audience with. Like ObamaCare. From all the money they get pumpin in from the old health insurance companies....they find it mandatory to put negative spin on ObamaCare at-least once an hour.....while other news outlets report on regular news.

last week they blamed ObamaCare on all the failures of the middle-class.....lullz...ObamaCare's BARELY even been out and their on a 24/7 marathon in an attempt to destroy it.

they are not a news channel, just a propaganda outlet....funded by the rich.

I'm calling shenanigans. However, even if it is a little bad, pot can't be any worse than the chemicals left over on our vegetables, the pollution in the air, or the pills our doctors push down our throats.

At the end of the day, who cares if it hurts YOUR brain? It's your brain and body, do with it as YOU wish. Life will only happen once, and a well lived one is usually dangerous. So live accordingly.

It's a joke, it's altered from some old meth PSAs. I thought "the pot" would give it away

Successful people, not just ?lazy stoners?, want pot laws to change.

That?s the message of new website Marijuana Majority
, which displays over 600 influencers including Peter Thiel, Sean Parker, Paul Bucheit, and Dustin Moskovitz who?ve supported marijuana law reform through donations or quotes. Now it wants Twitter?ers to persuade pot-favoring politicians, celebs, and technologists to stand up.

Quote:
Marijuana Majority?s site is designed to make it clear who supports pot law reform so others feel comfortable coming forward. Any of the influencers it lists can be clicked to reveal how they?ve supported the movement. It shows political initiatives they?ve funded, things they?ve said, and icons that denote if they advocate for legalization, decriminalization, medicinal marijuana, or ending the drug war.

When I asked why it was important to get tech leaders on board, Angell told me ?They?re influential, particularly to younger, web-connected people. A lot of them aren?t shy about getting involved in policy debates and supporting organizations and initiatives that they agree with.?

Here?s a small partial list of tech leaders on Marijuana Majority and their specific contributions to the cause:

Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group ? Said California could bring in over $1 billion in revenue that could aid communities by taxing and regulating marijuana.

Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal, creator of Founders Fund - Donated $70,000 to the Yes on Proposition 19 Campaign, the 2010 California Initiative to Legalize Marijuana.

Sean Parker, co-founder of Napster and Airtime, first president of Facebook - Donated $100,000 to the Yes on Proposition 19 Campaign.

Cory Doctorow, co-editor of Boing Boing ? Said he doesn?t take mood-altering substances, but believes ?everything that we call ?drugs??should be legalized and brought into the light of day?.

Dustin Moskovitz ? co-founder of Facebook and Asana ? Said a California initiative to legalize marijuana could stabilize national security, aid the economy, and reduce prison overcrowding from jailing non-violent offenders.

John Perry Barlow, co-founder of Electronic Frontier Foundation ? Said maybe the US and Mexico could try decriminalizing drugs.

Paul Bucheit ? Creator of Gmail and FriendFeed ? Said marijuana prohibition is an attack on our right to control our bodies and minds, as well as a multi-billion subsidy to organized crime.

last week they blamed ObamaCare on all the failures of the middle-class.....lullz...ObamaCare's BARELY even been out and their on a 24/7 marathon in an attempt to destroy it.

they are not a news channel, just a propaganda outlet....funded by the rich.
uh dude... how would I know that and why would I even believe you? I don't have a political team and don't follow the sport... and obviously since you are the smartest person on earth... why don't you fix the issues for us?

I believe weed is the only drug in the world that sure has absolutely no physical / psychical effects, including its total zero addiction rate, as just about anyone who smokes it all the time knows already.

I also don't think any drug in the world has so many well read advocates - it turns you into an advocate.

if its not really a big deal why does the 420 crowd obsess about it so much? Nobody here thinks people belong locked up for 10-25 years for petty dealing charges but the 'war' that is on with this doesn't really exist like it used to.

I care very little about the subject but one thing i can say without a doubt is if smoking weed is even close to living your life to the fullest? Time to rethink your life..

who makes up the 420 crowd? Most pot smokers do so with little fan fare. the vocal 420 people are a subset of them. Id wager that the subset of pot smokers who obsess about it so much is rather small.

Someone told me years ago that I need to rethink my life due to my interest in porn. I've since made a living from it, living life as full as I can as a result of that, etc, et al.

I don't think i've ever met a chronic smoker that wasn't dependent.

Actually, its very difficult to treat weed addiction precisely because it can be so easily rationalized to be "no big deal".. .even when people can't stop smoking no matter what.

But that's a component of any REAL case of addiction. I uppercased real because I think addiction is highly over-diagnosed.

anyhoo, getting an addict to realize he's addicted is the biggest part of treating an addict, addict of anything.
