It depend if they are reachable from the airports. Like here in Montreal, let say a flight goes to UK, passed New found land they are no longer on radar, and they have a pre-defined route, but if in mid-atlantic the plane explode, they won't know until the time they are supposed to get back on radar.

It flew right back over Malaysia past KL and few other airports - The biggest issue is that someone turned off the transceiver just before it turned - I cant think of a reason to do that, and it would have to be someone in the cockpit as far as I know...

It seems someone did not want to know here it was going.....

I looked that up and yes, it's a complicated process and has to be deliberate by someone who knows the systems. There are multiple redundant power sources that need to be shut off to shut down the transponder.

I don't get why if the plane had changed direction and was flying to a different airport did air traffic control not know this

and if they decided to fly to another airport because of 'problems' surely it wouldn't just disintegrate without trace much later.

And why did the transponders not work or the black box.

And when are they so keen to discount terrorism yet the US say it can't be ruled out.

Welcome to the third world where corruption and cover-ups are just another day in the office, no matter how disastrous they may be. It's hard to get the truth about anything on this side of the world. The last crash they had here was blamed on ghosts. Yea, you read that right. The official reason was that the spirits were angry so they caused the accident.

Malaysia rejected the USA's offer to help them, so you can pretty much figure out what kind of monkey business is already going on. The Malaysian military are the ones who tracked it further, or so they claim. Whatever the cause, it will somehow be used to benefit the elites in Malaysia and/or China.

Something funky is going on. That much I believe.

I think radar has limits - Over the Atlantic I know planes are off radar for most of the journey - They are positioned by the transponders that had been turned off...

They are saying that military radar saw them for longer, I suppose that makes sense - the military would have radar in more places and even at sea - They eventually dropped off altogether, but that does not mean they were not there.....

It's not unlikely that one of those countries shot it down by mistake or crippled it and then it crashed. I remember when Ukraine/Russia shot one down returning from Isreal and denied it right to the end and no one else was saying anything for quite a while and then finally, a NATO country (if i recall correctly) threatened to produce satellite photos of the missile detonating near the plane. The Russians kept saying over and over how they had observers there and everything went according to plan with the test missile and had no clue what happened to the plane until they were about to be exposed.

As usual, the media in this case are being unhelpful.

Civilian radar is passive, it cannot see a plane, it only sees the transponder (when its turned on and functioning).
The transponder broadcasts information to local ATC networks.(like your phone does to your network)
1. Position
2. Altitude
3. Bearing
4. Condition. ( the pilots normally set this to 1000 )

If there is a problem, either pilot can type in 7500 (Hijack); 7600 (catastrophic failure) or 7700 (mayday).

Military radar, on the other hand, is active (doesn't matter if the transponder is working or not) it "sees" the aircraft. However its range is much shorter..<200 miles in good conditions.

The US military have been searching to the west of Malaysia since Sunday at least, possibly Saturday. They still haven't come up with anything.

According to Channel News Asia, they have their hands somewhat tied. And now with the military coming out with info that they clearly had been sitting on for 4 days, they have been letting everyone search in the wrong area in purpose. Doesn't pass the smell test.

As TheSquealer said above, they may have shot it down by accident, or someone in a high position is in on the whole thing and the plane is being repurposed for something else. Until it's found, there is no way to know. Malaysia (and SE Asia in general) is full of radical Muslims, so the sky is the limit here when trying to think of what may have happened. The only way to put it all to rest is to find the plane and the black box.
