The Three Greatest Myths about America

1. MYTH. Americans are stupid.

FACT. PEOPLE are stupid. Anyone that is different than me is stupid. Anyone that disagrees with me is stupid. Bush is stupid. Clinton was stupid. Saddam is stupid. Chiraq is stupid. Everyone is stupid, especially people that are different than you.

2. MYTH. Americans are really religious.

FACT. Americans aren't religious at all. We may be liars but we're not religious. I don't know a single person that has been to church in 20 years and I live in the South. The only Americans I have met that claim to believe in a god only say that to keep their parents happy. Census results? Lies. We're a Godless people. Trust me. People here don't pray anymore and we think "The Commandments" were a group of black guys that played music in the 70's. The only thing worshipped on Sundays in America is the NFL. You want religion? How about 40 million people celebrating touchdowns every Sunday (Except Bengals fans).

People in America think that the pope is a funny little man with a queer little hat.

FACT. We Americans are brainwashed by FOX now, not CNN. Americans stopped watching CNN in large numbers years ago. The only people that watch CNN anymore are people in Europe and a few other places. If you watch CNN and think you are getting American news, you are wrong. You're only getting the news CNN WANTS you to see. In fact, they're brainwashing YOU!

largely agree...tho I would say that even if people aren't religious there is a noticble religious influence that I don't feel over here in the UK.

Hi Stan,

I myself am not an immigrant but my grandfather was. My great grandparents left Italy for the United States on April 15, 1921 on a ship called the Guglielmo Peirce. He was 34 and she was 36. Both were five foot three inches tall with dark complexion and dark hair. The Ellis Island records list them as "brown". Funny, huh?

About myth 2. A lot of people are under the illusion that Americans are religious, and more specifically, Christian.
We are probably the most christianized people on the planet, but even in the gallup polls where people "lie", only 50 million Americans claim to be "christians"
50 million out of a population of about 250 million, that's about 20%.

However, the christian dogs are the ones that bark the loudest, and to add yet another cliche, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, so the "christian right" influences public policy to a degree largely disproportionate to their percentage of our population.

And yes, you're all stupid

and a bit like Sarah_webinc said... even if your not christian... american's morals for exemple are greatly influenced by religion

and politicians often make religious references... something that you would never see in canada for exemple...

There is an element on this board that in which the above holds true, but by and large in my experience your contention is simply not true. Unfortunately, the people that are like that are very VOCAL. We forget the silent majority, who are kind, openminded, benevolent. I presume you're saying that Americans are brainwashed because you believe we ascribe to a worldview that is diametrically opposed to the rest of world, particularly Europe. Granted, we live in strange times, but American opinions are not as different as you'd think.

1) A minority believe the U.S. should ascribe to a unilateral foreign policy. 61% support a multilateral approach to foreign policy., 65% believe the U.S. should support invading Iraq only with U.N. backing.

2) 75% of Americans consider global warming a "serious problem" and a clear majority supported ratifying the Kyoto Protocol.

3) 71% of Americans support ratification of the International Criminal Court

4) 81% support U.S. ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

5) On genetically modified organisms (GMOs), the majority believe it makes food more poisonous and 86% believe the govt should require labeling which is the EU's policy.

So if you're going to say Americans are brainwashed, then you'd have to say the Europeans are brainwashed too.

And, you know what, I might agree with that.

Just a couple of things. You claim the USA isn't religious. Why do you have "In God we trust" on your currency?

Also, why is there this great furor at the moment about the possibility that "under God" might be taken out of your Pledge of Allegience? People are getting very upset... even on this board.

If Americans aren't a VERY religious people you certainly enjoy paying lip service to it.

Clint Eastwood was suing someone who wrote a biography on him saying it portrayed him as being a wife-beater, atheist and coward..

thought it was quite interesting that he included the atheism in the law suit. Maybe he really feels strong about his faith or maybe he thought this would damage his standing in the community..

Anyway I'm glad to hear the USA isn't as religious as I thought. I wonder when there will be an atheist President.

Compared to other western countries it is.
Even if it isn't as high as statistics point to - why the need to lie on anonymous surveys? it's not like being put on the spot in public.. the fact that so many are doing so should point to the large christian influence on US culture.
