Potato Wedges or French Fries?

Regardless of either being home made from scratch, bout to be oven cooked, or purchased at a fast food outlet....

Whats your choice?

I'm rapidly moving into wedges these days - Not for health reasons - They are just so much more flavourful

your not including chips (UK).

i say chips (UK) as in the usa i belive chips are crisps.

i am not sure they eat real chips in the uk.

but wedges are as close as you get to chops, but heather and have a more jacket potatoa flavour.

Wedges until there was a load of bad potatoes used to make them a few years ago and I couldn't tell through all the spicy coating on them that they weren't right.

the problem saying french fries is that they (in the uk) are made out of mush. they are not real chips.

it would be interesting to know if they each uk style chips in the usa as i am sure they are much better for you than fries.

Oh please tell me the difference between French Fries and Chips. Are they both not potato based?

OK, cool. Its kinda like this - Sorry if it gets long...

So.. In the USA a fried potato is normally referred to as a 'French Fry'

In the UK, Reconstituted / Extract is moulded into thin 'Fries' - And called a french fry. But buy a potato, cut into sections, fry it in oil... You have a 'CHIP'...

Think of it like this - The below is made from thin sliced REAL potatoes... WE call these 'Crisps'





But these Pringle things are also called 'crisps' but are made from reconstituted potatoes...





Now to add to the confusion, what the USA calls 'Chips' are...





But we call them 'Crisps'... Like wise take these two pics below....





Those are greasy UK 'chips'... However, the thin ones below, that are made from Reconstituted Potato, as opposed to a REAL POTATO are 'French Fries...




So basically, if you are going to eat fish and genuine potato fried in the USA you are eating what we eat - Or otherwise, you are not...

Its more of a UK thing than a USA thing... You call both French Fries - We differanrate between the the tow. and call chips chips, as opposed to calling crisps chips...

For making at home from whole potatoes then wedges are easier to just rub oil on, dust with seasonings and bake. Cut into approximately same size and you're OK to go.

BTW: I only called them french fries if they're cut into square profile. Otherwise I guess they're just fried potatoes.? Potato wedges? Home fries? (often done with caramelized onions) just eat them.

French fries are (well in the uk anyway) very thin, and such as mcdonalds i belive they are a sort of mush made into the shape.

while with chips (UK) they are cut potatoes.

i'm not one to trash fast food places but one thing i can't handle is the fries at places like burger king and mcdonalds. I know most people would say that all their food is terrible but their fries are just horrid and tasteless. Not to mention loaded with wax that doesn't seem to digest well. Keeps them from going rotten for a good 85 years though i'm sure.. hehe

I try not to eat either these days but I like both, would depend on what they go with.

Potato Chips


Fried Potatoes –also in diced form


French Fries –crinkle cut


French Fries –regular cut


Shoestring Potatoes or Potato Sticks
Potato chips in a different form


Tater Tots
Difference with French Fries –crunchier outside, mushier inside


Potato Wedges

Buy Fish & Chips in the US and get wedges.
It's a rare place in the US that would bake them. Almost all are deep fried. A few chips claim to be baked.

I heard something on Jim Hightower, that in the UK, Pringles came up with some crazy argument about their "crips" so they were taxed at a lower rate. I think it was in the UK they were claiming Pringles were sliced potatoes, where in the US they could never get away with that.
