1 in 9 Americans think html is an std

Mechanics could rattle off acronyms all day long that nobody has ever heard of, and vehicles have been around for over 100 years. Granted, people spend a lot of time on the Internet, but why should the standard person know what HTML is? To what purpose?

Did you read the article?
23% thought an ?MP3″ was a ?Star Wars? robot. It is actually an audio file.

18% identified ?Blu-ray? as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos.

15% said they believed ?software? is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs.

12% said ?USB? is the acronym for a European country. In fact, USB is a type of connector.

Those numbers seem reasonable to me; this is the percentage of people who cannot afford
the things that introduce those terms.

What percentage of that percentage could give accurate directions to the food bank?

Just think of retired people in their 70s or higher that might have never touched a computer in their lives. Theres no way my 80+ year old grandparents know what even half that stuff is. As long as they have their analog cable tv with the price is right they dont give a shit. If the numbers were higher there might be cause for concern.

I would not expect anyone from an older generation to know what any of those things are.

If they interviewed only people in their 20s, yeah it's pretty weird, but likely that's not what happened at all.

This is reasonable, given what blackmonsters said about many people being able to afford very little of the stuff mentioned; also the obvious element of age - my granny can barely work the television, God knows what I'll be unable to do at her age (find the will to take off my total immersion digital sex suit, maybe?)

A while ago I was sat next to an American on a bus across France and she wanted to know if we'd drive to England... there's always one (or 313 million). Honestly, I think everyone has a share of these types, but because the US is dominant and relatively insular the tropes get spread around alot more.

Also I assume it was multiple choice - They didn't think it was an STD, they didn't know and just ticked a box...

My dad saw Star Wars, so I doubt he would confuse R2D2 with an MP3 but the other stuff? He has probably seen commercials for Blu-Ray, why should he know what html is?
