New Laptops dont have CD Rom drives anymore?
I just bought a new laptop online, got it in the mail and discovered it has no cd rom drive. This is so bizarre to me, a lot of my software is on CD rom and some of the video content I bought is on CD/DVD. Im thinking of returning it. Is this common now? new machines dont have cd rom? |

				 | Why would you buy a computer without even looking at the specs? That makes literally zero sense to me. It's not standard; you just didn't pay any attention to what you were buying. |

				 | What model is the laptop? It's more and more common these days, so it is a good idea to really pay attention to what it is you are buying, and to look at all the tech specs.

				 | Correct! Laptops don't have or need CD's anymore. Besides taking up a ton of space relatively, they eat up too much power. If you really need one, do like Blazin says and pickup an external drive. They are dirt cheap now.

				 | A regular DVD only stores about 4 GiB of information. A Dual layer DVD can store about 8 GiB. But USB flash drives which store 32 GB are now very common and I believe it's easy to find 64GiB drives. Probably every year or two this will double. So it makes little sense to continue supporting the CD/DVDs for portable storage. Soon enough even a dual layer 8 GiB DVD is going to be much like a 1.44 MB floppy disk. It will be a joke for storage.

				 | 512 GB USB 3.0 flash drive http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Preda...pr_product_top It would take over 100 standard DVDs to equal the storage capacity of this. Within three years this will probably be available for $30-$50. Within five years it'll probably be less than $10.

				 | With the low price, ease of re-usability, speed and usb ports on almost everything that supports mass-storage mode, cd/dvd media is becoming less and less convenient, let alone needed. There will always be the people who burn cd/dvd/bray to use in the classic formats, but for those people there will be availability of external cd/dvd writers and bluray writers. Come on, it's cheap - if you need one badly enough, spend the $60 on an external |

as less use of disk media happens, these will come down in price anyways. Don't be surprised if "cd" albums are sold on read-only thumb drives soon, too. | |

				 | Actually it depends on the laptops size. Anything less than 15 inches is a toss up on the CDROM. They don't include it because it is HUGE compared to the rest of the laptop. Also thin laptops don't have them for the same reason. You have to buy a beast to get one.

				 | Think about how often do you really use your DVD drive, usually its when you install software or burning a backup DVD. Which you only do occasionally so it makes more sense to have an external DVD for these jobs, and with out the DVD you will get tons more battery life out of the laptop which I think is even more beneficial.

				 | My laptop have blu ray tho i bought it 3 years ago.Technically there wont be even need for classic harddrives, you could use usb sticks instead.Only potential problem with that is how someone could easily steal stick as you dont need to open computer to get it. |

				 | I've been waiting for this to become standard. It's better for a laptop for many reasons. Lighter, easier on energy, more space for other more important things, etc. Grab an external DVD drive if you have content that you need to install by disc. I've been downloading most of my software over the last few years.

				 | I have a TRS-80 Model 4 and 2 x TRS-80 Model 1's, with floppy drives and floppies for all of them. And get this, they still freakin' work. Amazing. I wish the cassette player still worked for the model 1. I think I can still buy one at Radio Shack but I'm too embarrassed to.
